Desert Island Discs

Aug 11, 2005 10:07

Have been asked to do a Desert Island Discs thing for a Popular Music academic newsletter thing. After a slow start I really enjoyed it... Not quite totally decided so I thought I'd get you all to read what I've gone for and why. Let me know what you think - and more importantly, whether you agree with me.... And if you are feeling minded to do so ( Read more... )

7. I love that song too. I first heard it when watching them on Glastonbury then my brother got me the 'sisters ep' on vinyl. I must root that out at some point.

What about a token industrial track? And what about your fave silly girly bands like Shampoo and Transvision Vamp?

See intro bit - decided to omit industrial and other angry type stuff cos it didn't seem like what I'd want to listen to if I was stuck on a desert island... Shampoo/TV I decided a bit too silly - like them but not enough to include in top ten... I spose No Doubt is doing the silly girly thing but in a slightly more 'proper song' type of a way!

In general I'd have to disagree with you on almost all counts, but that'd be because I never was much of a fan of most of the bands you listed :)
For example I don't like No Doubt, but love Gwen Stefani's new stuff (well some of it anyway).

Interpol and Bjork I definately agree with, though I probably would have chosen different songs. For Bjork it would either be Army of Me or Big Time Sensuality. I've only heard one Interpol album though so I can't comment on NYC as your selection.

I think I'm going to have to do this now...

I've almost worked out which tracks (just need to work out which FLA song goes in). Now I need to work out why they are there. It's looking scarily un-bleepy at the moment which is kinda weirding me out ;)

I could never come up with just 10 songs and favourites tend to vary anyways but it did occur to me that to keep up with modern trends and the problem that a lot of modern songs will not be available on vinyl, plus wind up gramophone players probably only play 78s, that a wind up mp3 player would be more likely at some point so it should be desert island downloads - 3 hours of your favourite music.
Okay so thats far too long and wouldn't fit in a small publication or half hour radio show but thats just gratuitous nit picking.
I'm dubious that any song could manage to remain uplifting after a few months of only 10 songs to listen to though. Perhaps 10 tunes you'd least like to hear that would encourage you to build a raft as soon as possible.

my doctor is sending me for liver related tests without knowing why as i'm high on 1 out of 3 and its always at least 2 so hes just trying anything.
My building society is taking my M12 forms for payment of mortgage interest by DSS and losing them (they have no record of receiving either from my branch, I suspect my branch are plotting against me).
But otherwise okay aside from the occasional urge to strangle a passing mopey goth who might be really deeply upset and depressed by comparatively minor problems (or the urge to go postal down the alliance & leicester) :)

Btw suggestion for suitable raft making music would be The Best BBQ Album in the World currently being advertised on the TV
