free-range kids, how much independence at what age...

There have been a number of stories lately about pre-teens taking the nyc subway on their own and causing a stir, whether it's appropriate for a 9 or 10 year old to be permitted to travel a known, short route.  I think I'm in favour of it.  I like to think, in this small town, children do have more free-range here.  There's more of us stay at home ( Read more... )

wrt to parenting your child, and allowing him/her the same as, less or more independence than you had as a child?

I really think I want to give him/her about the same that I had. In fact, I would say that at this point I'm fully committed to it, but I am also aware enough to realized that I may change once I see my child :) I'm also aware that I may be fighting culture to a certain extent and we'll just have to wait and see how that works out. Of course, that line of thought borders on the depressing.
