Tanabata (七夕, meaning "Evening of the seventh") is a Japanese star festival, originating from the Chinese Qixi Festival. It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively). You're right! When I was a child, I used to write a wish on a piece of paper and hang it on a bamboo grass. :)

this sounds so sad. makes not celebrating it seem pretty calloused and unfeeling.

Yes, the story itself is really sad. But people think it's kind of romantic, I think.
