Ugh

Had my first of two fantasy football drafts last night, and I have to say I am not particularly thrilled with my team. Drafting 11th out of 12 made me always feel as though I had to stretch a bit for some picks because I knew the potential players I was going to want/need would not still be on the board when they came back to me. Add to this the ( Read more... )

Well actually no... you didn't see the Defensive scoring sheet that I had calculated beforehand that shows the statistics of the top 12 defenses last year with both Points and Yards Allowed scoring, only Points Allowed Scoring, and neither rule scoring. And even with our current league of just Points Allowed scoring (on top of the standard DST scoring for sacks/ints/fumbles/TDs etc.) the difference in points between the Ravens and Bears compared to all the other defenses AND compared to the other running backs and wide receivers was too great... let alone compared to tight ends ( ... )

Whereas I much prefer the "wide shift" in points scored. If I'm going to lose, I'd rather lose big. Like 125 to 45 or somesuch. I lost too many games by a point or three last year, which is more likely to occur when you score consistantly in the 85-95 range as opposed to getting the occasional huge 130 point game and the blow-out 50 point loss.

Ordinarily I'd make it my life's mission to draft Vincent Jackson on Sunday just to further piss you off, but it would leave me in the rather awkward position of having to PLAY Vincent Jackson, which is too foolish to consider.

I didn't say I wanted Vincent Jackson overall... I just wanted him in THAT SPOT in the draft. Of the WRs available to me at that time, I thought he had the best shot of getting good points.

You needn't worry your little shaved head over what I'm doing... with that third pick you just need to decide what's stronger... Alexander's ankle, Gore's forearm, or the Chief's offensive line.

I... don't know why... but I read all of these comments.

I find fantasy football interesting, but I simply don't have the depth of knowledge to play. And I'd hate to be like that person who gets yelled at at blackjack tables for effing up the deal for everyone else at the table by hitting when she should stay. :)

Well the advantage of fantasy football is that there are no bad plays that screw up other people like there "is" in blackjack. If you make a bad selection, it just means that there are better players available for me when my pick comes around. People are more inclined to yell when you make a good selection and take a player they might have wanted (like I did when Amanda Lacey took Vincent Jackson).

As far as depth of knowledge... it's only a one-year problem. You do that first year completely in the dark... and assuming you are diligent in following what happens to your team, you gain a huge amount of football knowledge and subtlety that you never knew before. Thus when the off-season happens you follow along a little more than normal with what goes on, you follow the pre-season much more than before, and before you know it, that second year you're just as up on things as most of the other players.

If you have that roleplaying power gamer / min-maxer gene within you... you can easily transfer it over to fantasy football and do
