I haven't been able to post since the election. Too much to say, and yet I am not sure this is where I want to say it. Like Bill Maher said, I felt like Charlie Brown waiting for the football to be yanked away at the last minute all night on Tuesday.

Walking home from vulgarlad and starkyld's great election night fiesta, I passed lots of drunk white kids, some of ( Read more... )

Do you remember Rose Bird?

I was talking about her with my mother, who was a friend and fellow Judge about how they both categorically opposed the death penalty.

My father supports is in extreme cases, and so do I, but only when I approach it from an empathetic viewpoint of the victims, even though I know it doesn't serve a deterrent and sends the wrong message about the morality of state-sanctioned murder.

I'm sorry you lost your friend.

I don't. Was she also a judge?

I didn't find out about Ed's death until long after it happened. Bali was so far away that it seemed really unlikely I would have known anyone there.... Turns out that the world is smaller than I think.

It was a long time ago. I barely remember the controversy myself.

It's a pretty sad story. She died in 1999.

I think there's a chance that the courts will do the right thing on Prop 8.

I absolutely oppose the death penalty. I don't believe governments should have that right. My feelings on revenge are a bit more ambiguous, though.

The thing about violence -- yes. It's confusing. It confuses me as well.

In lieu of an intelligent comment, I bring you this 1932 photo of Times Square. It's pretty like you. But you aren't nearly as old.

Oh what I would give for it to look like that now!

I was up there on Wednesday night to see the stage comedy adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps (which was great fun) and Times Square is so bright it's like daytime in the middle of the night. It actually feels like you're indoors.... like Vegas. All artifice. And the opposite of green.

I'd prefer street cars and Packards!
