Canon Character and Series: Fox McCloud from StarFox
In-Game Name: Fox McCloud
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Position & Ship: Pilot on The Fiertia Serenity
Appearance: Fox is an anthropomorphic fox. He has caramel-to-orange-ish colored fur, with white on his muzzle, neck, chest and stomach, tail tip, and inner ears. There is also a white stripe on his head. His build is average, somewhat tight-muscled, and height-wise he compares to a normal human male with his ears, slightly shorter without (so 5’7-8’’ or so). His clothes change depending on where he is and what he is doing, but he usually wears a red scarf around his neck.
Personality: Mostly well mannered and even-tempered. He puts on a professional face with strangers, but can be anything but with someone he is familiar with. However, he has a tendency to dodge things, seemingly for no evident reason. Unnecessary conflict is something he tries to avoid, as well as arguments. He has a lazy-streak but will do most anything for money (being a mercenary) so long as it is in the realm of legality (being a “good” mercenary). Like any mercenary worth his salt, Fox is also inappropriately sarcastic.
Because of his equivocal nature he tends to let things go unsaid. This does not mean that he is exactly a pushover; he has some slight authority issues. But he is much more likely to take some roundabout way to get what he wants than he is to directly confront his problems. He is not totally aware of this personality defect, or if he is then he fails to realize how much it affects what he does, he just does it-so he could be classified as a creature of habit. And despite all of that, he does have (somewhat grudgingly) an honorable streak.
In public, Fox is extremely embarrassed of anything and everything relationship-related, and would probably rather be shot than get caught so much as holding hands. He would not admit to it, but he holds his family and friends in high regard and he is fairly quick to make connections with people and can tolerate most personalities.
Abilities/Weapons: If it is controlled via some sort of steering mechanism, Fox can pilot it. He’s worked around machines of all sorts for most of his life and he knows them inside and out. Flying contraptions in particular are his passion.
He’s also no slouch as a foot-soldier. Not the best, but toss him a firearm and he can more than hold his own.
How well can your character hack?: Medium-hard. He’s more familiar with mechanics than the average person, but programming was never much to his interest.
Weaknesses: While he is great at keeping his cool, certain subjects set him off. Like his father, for instance.
I’ve already mentioned that he’s dodgey. It’s one thing when he’s avoiding something that would best be avoided, but it can lead to awkward social situations when it happens with his friends for no real reason.
In terms fighting he is not particularly strong. If it comes down to a brawl, he can fall back on his agility, but he feels much more comfortable with a blaster in hand, or maybe a rifle from a distant rooftop…
Other than that, his fur is a bit of an inconvenience in certain situations. He cannot stand the rain, and would much rather deal with the desert heat than suffer a wet climate.
History: Fox's mother died giving birth to him. With no other relatives he was raised entirely by his father, James McCloud, and his father's friends/team members, namely Peppy Hare. In his younger days he moved around a lot. Typical fare for a military kid-his father was an ace pilot for various Ivona airships. He never minded though, or at least he couldn't remember minding. His dad was always his best friend, more so than any of the kids he'd met at the very many towns he’d lived in. One of his most treasured possessions is a red scarf that his father gave him as a gift one year, after being away on a long tour. He died not too long after, on a similar tour. The young Fox took it very hard, and convinced himself that one of his father’s teammates had betrayed him somehow, even though this was never proven, nor, to his knowledge, thoroughly investigated.
For as long as he can remember, Fox has wanted to fly planes. Maybe it was his great respect for his father. Maybe it was just in his blood. In any case, everything he's done since childhood has been to further this goal. He was always passionate about it before his father’s death, and afterwards it became more of an obsession. It was during this time that his moral code became a little more lax than what his dad might have approved of.
He effectively became a mercenary. As a soldier’s kid, his life had been essentially shaped around whatever orders his father was under. He never resented this until after James’ death, where he felt that the official handling of the situation was woefully inept and he began to focus his anger at his father’s superiors and eventually the whole of the airship armada itself. At that time his father had been stationed on the Victoria II. This ship in particular drew his ire, representing to him both the ineptitude and the arrogance he had begun to attribute to the military. Its captain, whom Fox had only heard about through hearsay and from his father during the short time he had been under him before his death, was nothing if not the apex of this, and thus Fox holds a deeply personal if misplaced grudge. Frustrated, and disgusted with the military of Ivona, he made his way to Vohemar as a sort of drifter. In reality his allegiance does not lie much of anywhere. He did odd jobs for money, where he generally would not do anything illegal, but he rarely if ever brought the character of his clients into question. This lifestyle did not last too long, however.
Likely it’s because of his own lack of affiliation, but something about the philosophy of The Fiertia really struck a chord with him. He’d kept his eye on it for a while. His flying dreams were still alive, after all. And really, what better way to find out what actually happened with circumstances surrounding his father’s death…
