Personality;
In your mind, what exactly makes a protagonist? The series brings us, Touma, who does not see himself as a hero, but goes out and does what he believes is the right thing to do and is seen as a good person by others. Then there is Accelerator who starts off as a villain, then slowly becomes more heroic later on. And then, we have the third and last hero: Shiage Hamazura. As the third protagonist, Shiage is said to be the balance between the first two. In the beginning, he looks like your typical side character that gets killed off early in a horror movie. While he does give off those vibes, there is a lot more to him than from first appearances.
Deep down, Shiage has a big inferiority complex towards people who are stronger than him. The reasoning behind this is in Academy City, there’s a power ranking for espers that put them on different levels depending on what kind of abilities they have and how well they hone them. The weakest is Level 0 which is what Shiage is ranked under. This means that he can’t learn how to become an esper and he can’t gain esper powers-In other words, he’s a normal person. Because of this, Shiage holds some resentment towards himself because he’s nothing special. He’ll never become That One Guy who is standing in the spotlight. He had a grim outlook on life that firmly believed that there was not a welcomed place for Level 0s and they needed to do whatever it took to survive in the world. Even it meant committing crimes that they were not proud of. After his best friend was killed, Shiage had ended up leading a group of delinquents (known as Skill Out) and he did not take kindly to the job. From his actions, Shiage had rather let his lackeys do the dirty work while he sat back and did nothing at all (unless he had to jump into the fray). And during a failed mission, Shiage had ended up encountering a Level 0 named Touma Kamijou. He tells Shiage that there is always a place for Level 0s and that are very capable of leading a hand to help others and even defeat espers that were stronger than themselves. Shiage’s best friend, Komaba Ritoku had shared the same ideals, but he did not understand his way of thinking. Since Shiage was portrayed as the villain of the mini-arc, he ends up getting defeated soundly by Touma. After that, he decided to leave his group and slowly started to change his cynical personality for the better.
After the events in SSI, Shiage ends up becoming a subordinate of a group called ITEM in Volume 15. This group happened to be a gang of female espers who were a lot stronger than Shiage and had walked all over them. Shiage was at their mercy and did not get any respect. However, we get to see a kinder side of Shiage form whenever he is given a task to burn up a corpse. Shiage ends up questioning the value of a human life and decides to let the ashes pour out into the river. While he did not want to dispose of the body in a grim way, Shiage was also looking out for himself because did not want to end up in that position. With that said, while Shiage has a rough exterior, he is actually fairly kind to others whenever they deserve it or show him kindness first. The bulk of this is reason why he was able to stand up and defeat Mugino Shizuri, a Level 5, without anyone’s help. One of the girls in ITEM named Rikou Takitsubo had risked her life to save Shiage from a pair of Level 5s. This had helped change Shiage greatly since it showed that there were actual kind people in the world who were willing to help Level 0s instead of walking all over them. Wanting to return the favor, Shiage ends up protecting Rikou and defeating Mugino.
While Shiage can be a perverted dope at times, he is actually quite kind to women in general as long as they are not being horribly rude. However, just because he’s kind does not mean he will not hold back a crude remark if he is throwing verbal jabs with one or hesitate to actually hit a girl if they are threatening human life. And while Shiage can be heroic, his methods can be quite questionable at times. If the situation calls for it, he might steal a car or fight dirty to protect himself and the people around him. He’ll even torture someone for important information if he really needs to get you to talk or throw in huge bluffs and lies in order to shake up his opponents. Whenever he gets into fights, he always tries to look for ways to end it as quick as possible or simply avoid battles entirely unless there's someone that he needs to protect. And while he can stupid at times, Shiage is actually fairly intelligent. He was able to hack into a system that the main antagonist of the series had created all with his cell phone alone. And he knows how to hotwire a car and open an ATM machine for cash along with using construction machines. And finally, he can be quite charismatic sometimes. He was able to lead a group of 100 delinquents and he was able to inspire an entire village to fight together in World War Three and even convinced Acqua of the Back to continue living whenever the man was ready to die. His character had started off in a cynical and dark light, but he grows up to be a more idealistic one. This world has many kinds of heroes. Those who fight for what they believe in, those who want to atone themselves for evil acts they have committed to others and finally those who become a hero for the sake of the people he loves. Shiage Hamazura’s role as a hero is the latter. And while he’s still young and has a lot to learn as a person, he is a good example to show that even normal humans are capable of becoming heroes to others if they really try.

--Whoa, seriously? [The video shall click onto the close up of an eye! There’s a little pause before the camera zooms out and you’ll be getting the face of a stupid looking thug who blinks and raises an eyebrow at the camera before speaking up.] These bracelets are pretty nifty. I could replace my old cell phone with this and move up in the world! This oughta amaze Kinuhata and Takitsubo if I can come back with on-Wait, wait, wait! Hold on a minute! I, Shiage Hamazura, have to backtrack for a second. I wake up in the middle of a circle, this weird chick comes up to be and gives me a letter that states the fate of this world rests on my shoulders and I get a high class room to myself? All of this is almost too good to be true...
... This can’t be in the middle of a dream, can’t it? Maybe I’ve been goin’ to those B-rated movies with Kinuhata for too long. What’s comin’ up next? Will I be putting on some shining armor and will be rushing off to slay a dragon by myself? Or will I be leading my personal army against the forces of evil? Okay, listen up! If this is gonna be an RPG dream, then you oughta call me “Great Hero Hamazura” and stick it to your memories. But just to be sure, I’m gonna pull my cheek to see if I wake up--! Okay, I’m going to do it now! [Shiage puts a hand to cheek to give it a big pinch and he lets out a yell. The cheek area is glowing red and he’s tearing up a bit from the pain.] Ummm... If I could feel that then… This ain’t a dream, huh?
Fuck. I wasn’t expecting to take a long vacation after all of the craziness that I had to put up with.
Log Sample; Shiage's experience with the movies was far from the romantic variety. Whenever it came down to it, he would be forced by Kinuhata to create a fake ID for her and they would sit together to watch an old B or C-rated movie and Kinuhata would get bored right in the middle of the whole thing. Even now, Shiage never understood her logic whenever it came to the films. So why did he find himself sitting in the middle of the theater and watching a play going on right now? Was it because he was subconsciously hoping that annoying little super girl would pop out from behind him and begin to criticize the actors? Or... Maybe, just maybe… He was looking for something different compared to high-tech ones that he was used to watching at home. While this wasn't a silver screen with special effects like CGI, the emotions and actions of the actors had hit him all the same.
"I wonder what’s going to happen next...?" Shiage had said this like a kid waiting for his Christmas present. He was already munching on his caramel popcorn expectedly and kept his voice down to a whisper. So far, the play had been all about a protagonist who was struggling in a no-holds barred world that had always knocked him down. However, the motivation of this young man was his lover who was captured by the evil king and he was going to do whatever it took to get her back. In many ways, Shiage could relate with this protagonist and this was probably why he wanted to watch this from beginning to end. When it came to the dark side of Academy City, he was still stained with the darkness all over him. But that didn’t mean he could run away from the evil forever. One day, he would have to fight back against the forces of Academy City. But for now, he wanted to keep his thoughts focused on the play at hand.
"The main protagonist has to win his girl back and run off into the sunset, right? There’s always a happy ending in every story!" Shiage said those words to himself as if they were a charm to keep him going. But on the other hand, the atmosphere of the play was heading in a darker direction. After the hero had gone through a myriad of bloody battles, betrayals and suffering... He had finally reached the castle of the evil King. The delinquent had his mouth gawked open which had given him an idiotic expression on his face. Even the popcorn he had in his hand had dropped to the floor. He was becoming more and more sucked into the play without even realizing it. The hero had rushed in to battle the King’s numerous solders and troops. While he was alone and it should’ve been impossible for him to have taken on an army all on his own, it was the Power of Love that had driven the hero onwards.
Eventually, the hero was finally facing off with the evil King. After having a romantic moment with his princess, he had told her to leave the area and wait for him to return. Deep down, the hero himself knew that he was going to defeat the king, go home with his princess and live to see another sunrise with her. Shiage also shared the same feelings with the hero… The delinquent was going to fully believe that this story would have a happy ending. After going through such torture, the protagonist deserved that much to himself, right? The swords between the hero and the king had crossed in a final clash...
And then...
"OH, COME ON! HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT WAS GONNA BE A TRAGEDY!!? HOW CAN I ACCEPT A BULLSHIT ENDING LIKE THAT!!?" The stupid thug had yelled from the bottom of heart as he was clutching his head and walking out of the theater. Right now, he was looking like the stupidest guy in the universe to people who were staring at him. Despite all of that, he knew that his own story wasn’t going to end like that. Putting his hands in his pockets, he sighed and suddenly formed a smile on his lips. "Definitely. I definitely won’t let my story end that horribly," Shiage had this with pride and determination within his heart. He would slay his dragons, get his girl and go home to a peaceful world where no one would have to get hurt anymore. Shiage Hamazura had a feeling that he could become a third-rate thug who could protect those he cared about without any worries.
