Atonal theory magic trick of the day

Something I figured out today:

Attention all composers!  If you have an AIT (0146 or 0137 - doesn't matter) and you want to move to a different AIT with a minimal amount of motion, keep the tritone (ic6) invariant and transpose just one of the two remaining pitches by a tritone.  Presto chango!  By moving only a single tone, your old 0146 is now an ( Read more... )

I like that you deal with all-interval tetrachords enough to just go ahead and abbreviate it that way, and that the understanding of the journal audience is assumed. I'd say you're one step away from a math teacher tries to be cool by teaching tricks that simplify arithmetic, like the Mathemagician on The Simpsons, but you're already dealing with numbers here. So it's a baby step at best.

I'll remember this next time I need to think of the smoothest voice leading from 0146 to 0137. I hope this is coming in handy with your revisions.

Are there only 2 possible AITs: (0146) and (0137) ?

Yes. In the 12TET universe, there are 12 trichords, 29 tetrachords, 38 pentachords, and 50 hexachords.

Of the 29 tetrachords, only two are AITs: 0146 and 0137.

And there is only 1 triforce.

Next things on Al's list to discover:

1. The Allspark

2. Jimmy Hoffa's body

3. How much wood a woodchuck could chuck, if said woodchuck could chuck wood.

I've already collected the one triforce. As for the others:

1. The Allspark is actually just a PS4 sent back in time.

2. Check under home plate at Yankee Stadium.

3. 11 pounds per day.
