i fail to see any argument for the death penalty.
do you want them to die? keeping them in jail for life has the same effect.
do you want to save money? it costs more to execute than it does to keep them alive.
do you want to make space in jails? executions make a negligible difference.
do you want them to suffer? making them accessible to other prisoners who will happily torture them for life is more effective.
tookie's penance was bullshit but so is the death penalty.

i don't totally agree that you need to revamp the entire execution system. I mean, because of that system I'd say that it is almost impossible to believe that any innocent man was put to death. Put a guy in jail for a few years and then realize you were wrong, that sucks.
Put a guy to death and realize you were wrong...well not much you can do about that
