Laura knew what that look on Bill’s face meant.
She had spent the better part of the last few years becoming an expert on all things William Adama. She could discern the slightest quirk of his brow, the subtle stiffening of his shoulders, even the briefest smirk on his face.
He was looking at her now, with a mixture of bemusement and unabashed affection. The unmasked twinkle in his eyes signaled that William Adama had an agenda this evening.
“Yes Bill,” Laura said without even looking up from her stack of reports. “What is it?”
“Nothing,” she looked up to see him shrug his shoulders; his face the picture perfect of innocence.
“William Adama,” she patronized, “I know you. And I know that smirk on your face means that you are up to something.” She lay her pen down and folded her hands neatly.
He beamed.
“Got you something,” he said gruffly, his voice brimming with pride. He pulled a tiny, worn book out from his pocket and handed it to her.
Laura caressed his offering lightly: “You got me a book,” her tone softened, her own love seeped through the consonants and vowels of her speech.
Bill snuggled up next to her on the couch, pulling her closer to his bulk.
“Cien Sonetos de Amor,” Bill read the cover, “the last copy left in the entire universe.”
Laura giggled: “You got me the last copy of the most romantic collection of sonnets ever composed?”
“I thought that you might like them.” Bill blushed slightly.
“It’s a lovely gift, thank you.” She leaned forward and gently brushed her lips against his. He grunted happily.
“Pick one, I’ll read it to you,” he whispered in her ear. A shiver ran down her spine.
“No, you pick one. I want to read to you.”
He complied happily.
