The after effects of the weed tickled them languorously.

Her hand, constricted by sterile tubes and beeping monitors reached for his on the worn sheets.

“Remember what you asked of me? That night?”

Words spoken, a question asked; the syllables and various letters seemed like something out of a dream as they floated away from his lips that night. But he remembers their weight on his tongue.

“Yes.” One word, one syllable now. A hundred ways she can respond, thousands of syllables, millions of tiny, seemingly inconsequential letters.

“Yes,” she says simply.

There was only one right way to answer.
