The breeze feels good on his skin, better than it’s ever felt. Cool, sweet, fresh; a fresh start. He’s at home here in a way that he never was back on Caprica; he knows that this has everything to do with the woman beside him, and with the journey that they’ve completed, together.
Laura is beside him, her tiny hand clasped lovingly between his own two hands. He feels her thumb trace the gold band around his finger lightly.
He loosens his hold on her to accommodate her questing fingers. They caress his ring with intent, twirling it around his finger.
Bill smiles: “Hinting at something?” he asks her, full of warmth and humor. She’s never indicated that she wanted a traditional relationship, let alone a traditional marriage.
He’d marry her right here and now if she’d let him.
Her laughter is but a ghost of what it used to be. Its beauty still warms his soft heart.
“No,” she says truthfully. “I never needed your ring. I had you, always, right here.”
Her trembling hand touches her wheezing chest.
“And this,” her hand changes spots, to caress the sturdy barrel of his chest. “Is where you’ll always have me.”
