Bill knew that Laura had her suspicions about his drinking.

She probably thought that he did it because he enjoyed the taste, maybe because it helped him forget that every day, they were on the run for their lives. She also probably surmised that he did it to numb the pain he felt after discovering that his best friend and pseudo-brother was a cylon, an enemy.

She was wrong.

Bill drank because it was the only way to have a dreamless sleep.

Going to bed sober only meant that his mind’s eye would torment him while he lay helpless under the heavy shackles of slumber.

He dreamt of the same thing each night; of Laura’s death.

Sometimes she was shot, ambushed in a mutiny and thrown up against the bulkhead to face a firing squad. Sometimes she drowned, getting caught in a current in that crystal clear lake she loved so much. Sometimes she killed herself, her faith long abandoned. Once he killed her, put a bullet between her luminous jade eyes because the cylons had captured them and were going to torture and violate her.

Lately all he could dream about was her cancer.

He could see the black, twisted roots of the disease curling and snarling under her beautifully pale skin. He could hear it gnawing and mauling away at her supple curves, the ones that he had spent far too little time loving with his own weathered body. He could smell its stench, so vile and base as it marked her flesh as its own. He could feel its texture, prickly yet also sludge-like; a thousand needles coated with blackened lard.

He drank himself to sleep so that he could retain his sanity.

So that he could still pretend that she was above the rules of mortality.
