They lay on the harsh ground of her tent, huffing and puffing from the delicious exertion they’d just enjoyed.
The bed was too soft for his liking. He felt like he was drowning in the pile of overstuffed pillows. She pushed him away from her body as soon as they finished.
Laura’s arms tightened around his torso, indicating that she wanted to stay connected with him in some way. Bill rearranged them so that they were comfortably lounging in one another’s arms.
“Gods Bill, you’re so warm!” she huffed, clearly annoyed with his desire to embrace her with sweaty limbs.
“Mmm, you’re so warm,” Laura giggled. Bill’s heart clenched. “I’m always so cold.” Breathing a silent sigh of relief, he dared to pull her even closer to him.
He contented himself with caressing her flat stomach. He imagined her pregnant with his child; she was beautiful.
The lines around her face and mouth were crinkled in a satisfied grin. Her soft, slight, belly rested against his own and contracted slightly with muffled giggles.

In the morning, Bill woke alone. He walked to his transport alone. He boarded the ship without a goodbye from his lover. Six months later he returned to Caprica City to find her wearing a rounded belly and an expectant glare.
They were married two weeks later.
“Will you wake me before you leave? I want to say goodbye,” Laura murmured before surrendering to slumber.
He waited for her breathing to take on the telltale rhythm of sweetened dreams: “I love you.”
Maybe this time, she’d say it back.
