The boat barely touched the dock before he leapt off of it and into her arms.
Too long had passed since he last held her. Time had stopped when she died; he had barely existed through each millisecond.
“Missed you,” she whispered into his ear.
“Me too,” he croaked, tears were streaming down his face. It was joy, it was relief; it was unconditional love for the woman in his arms.
“I built the cabin, just the way you wanted it,” he said.
“I know, I watched over you as you built it,” she said. He smiled; he knew that she had. There were days when he had felt her presence, her love, around him.
She caressed the side of his face and he smiled when he felt the cool metal of his ring resting on her finger.
“You could have asked,” she teased softly. “I might have said yes.”
“Didn’t matter, doesn’t matter. I always thought of you as my wife and partner. I still do,” he confessed.
Laura hummed happily.
“Good. Although you have some explaining to do,” she giggled. He looked at her confusedly.
“My mother and father are very interested to meet the man who gave me this,” she held her hand up and twirled the ring so it glinted in the sun.
“As are my sisters, they can’t believe I finally settled down in my old age. I haven’t brought a boy home for dinner since I was in college.” She winked playfully at him.
“Let’s not keep them waiting then,” he said seriously. “If they are anything like their daughter and sister, then punctuality is very important to them.”
Laura smiled serenely. “We have all the time in the world Bill. Let’s enjoy this.”
“I am,” he promised her.
