“I hate to say it, but, defence made their case. Prosecution didn’t.”
Bill’s words reverberated violently in her mind. The last time she had heard those words was fifteen years ago.
“I’m so sorry Ms. Roslin, but the defence attorney had the jury eating out of his hand. He’s made the defendant’s case. We had to agree to move to a settlement. This is the best thing we can do right now, it’s the only way we’re going to find justice.”
Justice. The quality of being right and moral. The belief that some sort of divine presence could prescribe the appropriate punishment for the wicked in order to protect the innocent. Justice.
“He’ll be serving seven months behind bars then he’ll do four hundred hours of community service. He’s also agreed to pay for any emotional damages. He’s already written a cheque for the funeral services.”
There was no morality, no right or wrong; only perception and the human tendency for selfishness.
“We have to look to the future.”
Laura dared to stare Bill down in the middle of his CIC. Fury coiled in her belly, flaring out to sear through her limbs.
If Gauis Baltar was innocent, humanity wasn’t worth saving.
