Laura sleeps restlessly in my rack, tossing and turning and perhaps replaying each moment of our earlier argument, reliving each insult I had thrown at her.
When I was a boy, my mother told me a myth about a young man who tried to harness the sun’s rays to defy the Gods.
And as with so many myths involving gods and men, the young man was punished, and his pride became a lesson for us all. By disrupting the sun, he had inadvertently tipped the axis of the planet and thus caused several natural disasters, which resulted in the death of thousands of his people.
The Gods banished him to a desolate cave at the end of the world, to live out the rest of his life in solitude and in darkness.
In my hands, I hold the sun’s rays. The ones that she had tried to tuck away in the tiny trash bin at our desk.
Dried, lifeless, yet glorious simply because they were once a part of her. Soon she will lose it all and my sun will implode.
A black hole. A desolate place. The only place in the universe that I want to be.
She will become my dark cave, my place of isolation.
