Kara found her sitting under a tree, facing the hill just east of the lake, as had been her habit the last few weeks. Off in the distance was the figure of a man, hunched over a pile of wood in front of him.

“So,” she drawled, her face splitting into a grin, “the Old Man finally found himself an Old Lady to settle down with.” Kara nodded off in the distance to the burgeoning cabin. “Took him long enough,” she said.

“I’m not overly fond of that name,” Laura huffed. “And I’ll have you know that he has six years on me.”

“I see, so he got himself a hot, younger thing?” Kara laughed heartily. Laura rolled her eyes affectionately. Even in the afterlife, she still was not quite accustomed to Kara’s brash and bold manner.

They sat together in comfortable silence, nothing but the light breeze ruffling through the tall grass disturbed their peace. Finally Kara spoke again; her words were carefully measured and serious.

“What will he do now?” she wondered.

“He’ll mourn us,” Laura sighed.

“Forever?” Kara asked, concerned.

Laura noticed her distress, and took her hand in her own.

“No,” she said reassuringly. “Just for a while, he needs to feel like he’s honoured us both.”

“Then what?” Kara asked. Laura smiled widely.

“Then he’ll live. He’ll see the birth of a new life, of a new era for humanity. He’ll be remembered as the strong guardian who led his people to freedom and peace. And then, after a long and rich life, he’ll come home, to you, and to me,” Laura said.

“I guess we had better get started on that welcoming party,” Kara said, winking at Laura.

“We have all the time in the world,” she said, “Lets let him finally live for today.”
