Her arms were around him in an instant, her slight frame shuddered slightly under his bulk, but she refused to let go. Carefully, she walked them both to the couch, where he continued to cling to her.
“His name was Liam,” he whispered hoarsely.
“Short for William,” she responded, running her fingers through his hair. “Bill I am so, so sorry.”
Hot tears fell from her red-rimmed eyes and mixed with his. Their grief carved rivers into their already worn faces; their hearts bled anew for yet another innocent child taken away from them.
“Parents should never have to bury their child,” he said fiercely.
“I know.” Her voice trembled as she recalled the agony of watching Billy’s tomb being ejected into space.
Suddenly he pulled away from her embrace and cupped her hallow cheekbones.
“Saul said that his biggest regret was that he never told Caprica or the baby that he loved them. He said that Liam died because he’d never heard the words,” Bill said. “I’m guilty of that, I haven’t -“
Laura’s heart broke for him as she read between the lines.
“I don’t need for you to say it to know that you love me,” she said softly.
“I need you to know,” he implored, his eyes shinning with conviction.
“I know Bill, I feel it.”
She enveloped him once more, raining kisses across his forehead and rubbing his neck. After a while, he sighed into her caresses, slipping his hand between their beating hearts. Laura felt him gently run a trembling hand across her left breast; she felt his fresh tears spill from his soul, onto the synthetic strands of her wig, soaking her cheek and neck.
“I love you,” he croaked into her neck.
If only words could heal.
