Cunning. Secretive. Persuasive; Richard had always praised her ability to discern between their private affair and their jobs as public servants. As a result, she lost herself, her identity; so absorbed was she in playing those roles to perfection for him.

Hard. Calculating. Precise; The Commander himself had used the words bloody-minded. This was the mask that she wore in public now, for the safety and survival of her people.

His kiss made her long dormant heart flutter wildly. She felt the edges of The President’s mask crack and crumble.

Bill smiled as he reluctantly parted from her lips.

For the first time in years, Laura smiled back.
