“Show me?” Her voice quivered, her request was devoid of the authority it normally held.

Bill merely grunted, before allowing her to carefully hold his bandaged hand within her own trembling palms. Boney, pale, and dry, yet Bill shivered as they caressed the broken, bleeding flesh over his knuckles, the touch was soft, worried, loving. These were the hands of his lover, his wife, his soul mate.

“Bill.” He sharp intake of breath as she began to discard the soiled bandage sliced through him, and he hung his head in shame. “Oh honey..” carefully, she wiped away the dried blood with a warm, wet cloth.

“You must think I’m a real piece of work.” He grunted, his eyes fixated on the floor, he could not bring himself to look at her, to see the disappointment in her eyes. If he was surprised to feel her cool hand pulling his face closer to her own, he did not show it. He merely accepted her kiss, clung to it, recognized it as the salvation that only she could offer him.

She pulled away slowly, but her hand continued to stroke the side of his craggy face.

“I need you with me. Fighting with me in my corner, I can’t do this alone…”

I can’t lead without you, I won’t love without you, I refuse to live without you.

“I’m here.” He rasped, pulling her closer to him, mindful of the wound she’s just redressed.

During moments like this they could each forget how vulnerable they were. When wrapped so tightly in one another's embrace, they could forget her cancer, his alcoholism, their mortality. They were whole like this, solid, warm, so very alive, so very much in love.

During moments like this, it was easy to recall what it was they were fighting for.
