Yep. Playstation is turning 15 today (December 3rd) marking a yearly anniverary of quality and bitchin' gaming.
Hearing that got me into a thinking mood about how I got into Playstation considering how I was more of a Nintendo gamer *shudders*.
I remember the Playstation as being the "other console" on the market around the time of the N64 which had already been released. Though admittidly I did not get a PS1 and ended up going to Playstion with the PS2.
But why? Why would I do such a thing? Well...a collection of things. For starters this was around the time I was a pretty big fan of Professional Wrestling and while that has died off a bit which is sad I do remember one key part of wrestling...the commertials. Every single game commercial that I ever saw that had something rediculously cool attatched too it had just one thing pop up after it..."Playstation..." I wished I could actually get my hands on those games but unfortunatly I was a bit young for a job. Enter the PS2.
I was completely unaware of the Ps2's release until I saw commercials for it's games, and also, not until a friend of mine picked one up and played for me a key series of the Playstion brand since PS1...Final Fantasy. Just seeing that added fuel to my Playstation fire. Finally, I was really big into Tekken at the time when there were still arcades around here...Tekken Tag to be precise. When I found out that Tekken Tag was on the PS2 and I could actually play the earlier games on the PS2... it sold me. I've been a happy little fanboy ever since.
Ironically enough Dan (the friend that was playstation) that got me into it decided to go Nintendo...huh.
To tell the honest truth, it's Nintendo that is responcable for Playstation.
Nintendo in their currupted ways said they were not going to go to CD technology because they saw it as unnessessary. However, they did decide that they were going to go to the CD format with an attatchment that Nintendo often does. They made a deal with Sony to create and pattend the concept to partner it with a Nintendo product. Sony said ok, and then, just days before Sony was set to unveil the product, Nintendo had revieled that they had decided to go with Phillips (I believe) instead of Sony. Sony...wasn't too happy. Not to be put down they designed a controller for the product, gathered support from studios that had been put off by Nintendo (Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Square Soft) and renamed the devise.."Playstation". The playstation then procceeded to crush the Nintendo 64 both in games and system sales. Then again with the PS2 and the Gamecube. The PS2 is in fact considered the most succeful console with thousands of units still being sold weekly across the world to a total of more than 150 million so far.
The PS3 unfortunatly has faced stiffer compitition this year with the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. But one is a wood stove wrapped in plastic and the other is something your Gran, your mother and your baby sister can enjoy...while your playing REAL games on the PS3. Lets face it Nintendo shot all real gamers in the foot this generation.
So happy 15th Playstion and thank you for giving us so many great games. Thank you for giving me some of my favorite games of all time.
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy 7
Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 3
Resistance: Fall of Man
And I hope that someday soon...a few of MY games will grace a list like this...and your platform. Cheers.
