If you don't have to, don't go under it.elnigmaJanuary 16 2003, 15:13:00 UTC
One of my eyes is severely astigmatic (if I close my left, I can't read this screen) and I can't correct it with contacts or glasses. I'm the 1:1000 that had this happen to them. It BADLY impairs my reading books, the monitor, anything. Its a bitch. It also can not be corrected with further surgery cause of the thinness of my cornea in a few small spots. My left eye sees perfect. There is a newer procedure that takes into account factors in vision that are in the back of the eye as well as the front. I don't know which place has it other than Johns Hopkins Medical center, but its a *better* procedure. I wouldn't get surgery if you could manage in glasses or contacts. I was losing my eyesight cause glasses were too thick to see through and I was getting progressively more sensitive and allergic to contacts. Even with only one eye seeing great, I'm better off.. most people would be worse.
As you may expect, I have dozen's of workmates who have had the procedure, including my cousin Rudy. They all love it. It has worked great. As in all procedures, there is some risk. Everyone that has had it told me the risk was acceptable compared to what they gained.
My brother had it.. he says don't do it!ladymistyJanuary 16 2003, 20:37:03 UTC
Hi Deggy, My brother had it and I just messaged him for some advice, to pass on to you. This is what he has to say:
"One advice - DON'T DO IT. you can tell her your brother had a bad experience with it and she can call me if she wants. 5 surgeries in 4 years, permanent scars, unstable vision, cant drive at night."
If you want his number or email, just ask, I will pass it on to you. Good luck..
I had lasik surgery 2 years ago. I researched it for 2 years before I finally made a decision. I found (imo) the best surgeon in the Dallas area and I have had NO problems at all. My vision was about 20/400 in both eyes. I had 2.5 astigmatism in one eye and 2.75 in the other. 48 hours after my surgery my eyes were perfect. One is 20/15 now and the other is 20/20. I have no problems with my night vision. My eyes get a little tired after work from staring at a computer for hours, but that happened before I had surgery.
So, if you are going to get it done, do your homework on the surgeon that you go to. Also keep in mind that they were doing these surgeries in Canada for 20 years before they ever did them in the states. You'll have far superior docs there.
I would venture to say that the people that have had bad experiences probably got the $499.00 special on each eye. I paid over 3g's for my eyes and I wouldn't change a thing.
One of the managers here at my office had it and loved it. Her vision was 20-250 and bad astigmatism and after the surgery she said her vision is perfect. I am thinking of it myself to be honest.

It's the best gift I ever bought myself.
