Havvy Watches Things: Teen Wolf Pilot

Sep 23, 2012 02:49

In light of everyone I know gushing over this newfangled who-dad called "TEEN WOLF," I figured that probably I should stop being cranky about stuff and maybe try watching it before continuing to complain that everyone's jumping fandom-ship and swimming on over there. Here's my thoughts and things, thurr be spoilers ahead.

Anyway, overall, it's like, not atrocious or anything. So much as I wish it was faster and a little less teen. - So... *SPOILERS* it does not get less teen, and structurally it is super irritating.

...and yet I totally fell into the stupid fic black hole, so. Yeah :\

Haha, I figured it would pretty much stay the same. I appreciate the warning, though! I can totally see the potential for shipping and fic-writing and what-not, so I might delve deeper.

Them fic holes come with a slippery slope. <3

I'm totally glad you didn't outright hate it! I mean, it's ridiculous and not worth the time everyone on the internet spends on it, but it's fun in the soap-operay indulgent kind of way.

And from a media studies perspective, it's groundbreaking, or whatever.

But Derek/Stiles? Got nothing on Dean/Cas.

Wait, it's groundbreaking? But, but, but Big Wolf on Campus!

Unless you mean the gay. I thought that wasn't canon yet, the production team was just playing with their audience by saying "anything can happen."

I mean all the discussion surrounding the gay (because no, it's not canon-and probably shouldn't be), but also the positive inclusion of queer characters. The queer baiting makes me gnash my teeth, but same-sex couples making out in party scenes is not a typical thing on American TV. And just the fact those two (potentially contradictory) things happen in the same show makes it rife for analysis.

Also, it's maybe the only fandom to seriously rival and possibly overpower SPN on the internet. So, yow.

I've watched a couple episodes myself and it sounds like we have the same problems. Although my biggest issue is just how stupid Scott is, but he's a teenage boy and I think he's supposed to represent the audience. Still though, he's annoying. I do like Stiles, and like you said, the Sterek ship is very tropey, so that's cute.

I am not a teen, I wish, but I, as much as any adult here, resisted the idea of watching it...c'mon is called TEEN wolf.
My sister though watched and really liked, convincing me to give it a shot.

Yes the first part of first season is kind of teen oriented, but it does pick up, because they do have a pretty decent plot. After that, the second half of S1 and especially in season 2 the High school scenario is nothing but that, a scenario. It completelly takes a depart from the whole "who is popular, who is on the team" thing and fully concentrates on the supernatural gory mistery side of it.

My boyfriend, a 28 years old straight guy, despises high school shows, he doesn't even watch movies that are set in high schools...I had to beg him to give TW a shot. Now, he has watched by himself the 2 whole seasons and already told me he is going to be watching the third season.

Well, besides even if Sterek does not become canon (I hope it will), its already confirmed they WILL have more scenes together, so that's a plus.

It gets better. The first bit was kinda slow, but after a few episodes it gets more interesting.

Okay, Scott still gets the award for "worst werewolf ever" but I feel like Stiles picks up the slack.

Watch the show for Stiles, he makes it worth it.
