So it comes to this, does it? How far this city has fallen to accommodate such vile threats ( Read more... )

Your Highness.

I believe they were looking for a portrait of some sort. [ a concerned pause ] Are you all right?

Ah, Ava, I trust you found them?

[he's quiet, only muttering in question: "a portrait?" to himself but it's loud enough to hear over the transmission, despite.] That is a rather vague description of an item to be searching for in such a dangerous place.

-I'm quite well, you needn't be concerned. At the very least, I do seem to be more successful at staying out of trouble than Caim has managed thus far.

[Another pause, then, as if realizing exactly what he's said isn't quite as lighthearted as he meant it.]

...He is all right, isn't he?

I'm not certain why they were searching for it, My Lord. I've only seen this specific portrait once, but it was a long time ago, and I never assumed it was of any specific importance.

The Ice Magister is recovering fine, yes. You needn't worry about him.

What portrait are we speaking of, exactly?

Of course not. He's in good hands, now. They both are. Nevertheless, I do wonder about their uncanny ability to attract trouble from time to time.

I'm afraid not. I've heard the occasional tale in my world, but this is nothing I'm familiar with.

Are you certain that it's a spirit that caused this?

That is disheartening... truly nothing at all?

It would seem most logical given the circumstances. I have only ever heard of ghosts or spirits attached to mirrors in such a way. Do you suspect otherwise?

That I can recall. There are a few others from my world here, I can speak with them.

I've seen many kinds of monsters, but nothing that could cause this great of an effect. You believe it was brought here with one of us?

This city seems to feed off the psyche these days, playing mind tricks of one form or another, even though I am not sure why or how. Still, I would not be surprised if it was pulled from one of you and conjured artificially, although it's entirely possible it's been here all along or was pulled from one of us inhabitants.

Caim mentioned a story he's heard as a child. I, too, heard a story of similar structure when I was a child.

. . . Where I come from, we call her the Bloody Mary. I don't think there's any known way to get rid of her.

...Not what would like to have been heard, of course, yet not a particularly surprising answer, either. Seems nothing is simple here.

Care to share your version of this legend?

It's a ghost story; whoever thought it was gonna be real in this place -- tch.

You're supposed to chant 'Bloody Mary' in front of a mirror; somewhere between three times to a hundred, but the popular count is usually thirteen. For bad luck. Usually, people do it in the bathroom, but . . . all you really need is a dark room, a mirror, and a candle, and you're good to go. She's supposed to come out of the mirror and claw your eyes out -- and kill you.

What's different about this one? Other than actually existing, shit --

...Well, I gather for one that the Ice Magister did not summon her, which always makes things a little more difficult. If she were only a threat by the foolishness of one who were to summon her, we could easily avoid any further mishap.

...sounds like some bad horror movie to me. Does this sort of thing happen often?

No, and while disturbances do seem to be becoming more common, not ones of this nature.

...You must be new, I don't recall seeing you the last time I spoke with the residents of this place.

[There is a pause. It isn't substantial, but there is a pause. (Disturbances? Plural? Someone's been keeping track of the resid-- since when is he a resident?)]

Yeah? Oh right, I guess I would be. I'm Yosuke. I haven't been around for long, only a few days. What do you mean disturbances?

I wish I could say welcome, but this is hardly a place anyone would want to be welcomed to.

The city has been left to rot for some time prior to the first of your arrivals, but while its population has been nil since its destruction, it has suffered from several anomalies. They've ranged from fluctuations of the mental state to physical beasts appearing when different conditions of the city are met and it changes its appearance.

Malevolent spirits are quite new as far as I know, however.

It sounds like a demon. I can only think of using a pentagram...

... [there is a small span of silence.] My apologies, I don't believe I'm familiar with such a thing. Would you mind elaborating?

It's a symbol. Ah, a design. It seems like even if a person does not have any magical abilities or background can use it. Demons generally don't seem to like it ... or at least, they shy away from it. I guess a way to control what is summoned, but I don't know much more about it. I wonder if the library here has anything more on pentagrams. I mean, if it could help... hm...

A symbol... I've seen many in my time, but one by that name I do not recall. And, while I regret to say so, I am not a scholar, sorcerer or a rune bearer; thus my knowledge is admittedly limited. The Magisters may be more knowledgeable of what you speak of. Or Lilith may be able to assist further.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if we have something of similar effectiveness here. Or, your "pentagram" may even work here despite our worlds being different.
