I understand about those 'blocks'. When I stayed there for a few days for the World Cup I stayed at a Ryowan, and the one I registered with had me staying at a sister one of theirs. They tried to tell me how to get there, but in the end said it was easier just to take me there. And after a few twists and turns I was delivered to the other one. (And it would've been hard to find it on my own.)

And yeah, for food it's hard to think of what is 'American' food. When I was over in London we went to an 'American' resturant once and it was Texas themed. And most of the menu was steak and potatos. And when I was in Japan I tried an 'American' breakfast once. Which was scrambled eggs and toast. (Although they put katchup on the eggs, and that just was wierd to me since I don't too many people actually eat eggs that way.)
