read all of this...i promise it's interesting
we made it to portland!
our friends drove us to a popular rest stop, them in the truck cab and us in the bed->

we hitched a ride with a sweet russian man named michael->

the ride was beautiful. i rode shotgun while zack slept on the bed in the back. i took soo many pictures it's too difficult to choose which ones to put on here.

when we arrived in portland, we walked across a bridge and pretty far before someone told us that we'd walked the wrong direction and that the theatre was back across the bridge we'd already crossed, but then..."my wife and i will give you a ride to the theatre! it's no problem." Oregon...its unbelievable.

we arrived at the washington theatre to this sign: "colin meloy tonight! SOLD OUT" ...and in response to that i laughed...perhaps a little too loud, tossed my bags on the ground and took a seat on them repeating phrases such as "awesome!" and "woohoo!" and "super!"

i decided to get out a book and start reading, while zack decided to take off around the corner without explanation. so sitting outside alone two and a half hours before the show, i dove right into "bee season" by myla goldberg....you know...like the book that "song for myla goldberg" by the decemberists is about. then colin meloy came outside ..and looked down at me reading the book and smiled big to himself and went to a chinese place for food.
my heart jumped out of my chest too quickly for me to register the situation and how great it was that mr. meloy was two feet from my face smiling, so i just looked down at my book and continued reading (looking like a big creepy obsessive fan for reading it outside his show).

then zack came around the corner carrying a large piece of broken wood which had obviously come from a decaying piano.
and he said..."this will be what we write our sign on" and handed me paint. what a brilliant idea !

and so i painted...and this was the product of my labor:

"we hitchiked to a sold out show and now we're stranded" with a couple hearts, notes, and a missing "h".

while i was painting the sign and zack was strapping on his accordion and a few ticketholders were lining up, colin walked back up to the theatre, looked at me painting the sign, smiled, and looked at zack with his instrument and smiled (i feel like at that point he should have slipped us a buck, but hey, who's being critical?)

plenty of people danced and took pictures and even asked about myspace information, but it took quite awhile to get any money. i decided to take part in the music making and had my first experience singing in public, in front of a large crowd, loud enough to be heard over the accordion, alongside zack. after singing "you are my sunshine," a boy form montana came over and gave me a ticket for the $4 we had made, sitting in my ballet slipper in front of the sign. i went to change and while i was gone, zack made a good five dollars more and was given a free ticket.

colin meloy and laura veirs both gave excellent performances, and sitting up front for free was pretty wonderful, but i still feel like he owed us a buck. i hope the show in san francisco is equally wonderful and that colin continues to name his on-stage skull cheryl, because we chose that name in portland and he promised to keep it, so it better stay official.

we went back to the piano dumpster that zack found the broken piece in, kicked at the keys of antique trashed pianos to make music, and walked to an unfortunately closed/dumpsterless ethiopian restaurant. after lots and lots of heavy-bagged walking, we ended up at manuel's house, which is both comfortable and adorable.

today was a time for relaxing, reading, and writing. we all walked to the "fresh pot" cafe, grabbed some books, and made ourselves at home for a good numbers of hours. everyone is working together to cook dinner currently and it looks like the menu is made up of chickpea miso soup with seaweed, green lentils and avocado, and soyogurt. i'm probably only typing all of this because of the white russian i was gifted with a half hour ago and because i'm so completely and terribly happy about both this very moment and the next few days.

the plan is to head to eugene, and then to hitch down the 1. zack promises that i'll see trees bigger than i ever imagined and i he had better be right.

we're hopping a freight train between the upcoming hours of 1-3 am...and to be honest, i'm equally frightened and excited.
