For those of you who don't know, I may end up being the ARES Emergency Coordinator for Okaloosa County here shortly. Then again, I might not, which is why this little planning document is on an flocked post. I'm letting you guys read it to make sure it sounds rational, and I'm begging for anything relevant (or non-sequitish) to be said about it.

...for those who don't have the time to read 3 pages of EOC/Emergency Prep Outlines )

ARES: Amateur Radio Emergency Services. The county puts us where they expect lines of communication to fail hardcore, i.e., at the hurricane shelters. Afterwards, they use us for damage assessment and such, if comm is still down.

We also do storm spotting (SKYWARN), although that isn't ARES strictly.

ARES teams responded within five minutes of the first plane hitting the WTC on 9/11, and continued to operate in tandem with FEMA, the US military, the Red Cross, etc etc for a week or two. ARES teams also deployed to devastated areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina.

Basically, 'cause we're ham radio operators, we can operate and communicate where, literally, nobody else can. That makes us valuable =)

I don't know, but I say you DESERVE it. And I'd let you be in charge of the emergency coordinations of my county anyday.

Verbage like "peacetime" will be edited out; unfortunately it was the most relevent I could come up with.

You're right about 'young'.

QSL the swearing.

Remove hotel reference altogether.

Sounds good, thanks =)

Don't feel bad about refering to peacetime a lot. Or calling everyone civilians. It's normal. Now, given, I dunno how things work down there in the south, so half of this confused me, and you get like 10 kinds of natural disasters we don't get up here, but it sounded good! Professional. Remember, if you become EC, it's 70% how you look, 20% how you sound, and only 10% what you actually say. Just a little tidbit to start your evening with.
