So I'm feeling pretty smug at the moment. Went in for reading with the grade 4 kids again today, and 'problem child' asked me if I'd brought in any cool books or comics for him. Unfortunately I still haven't been able to find anything appropriate. The ones I've come across are way too advanced for him, but the search continues... Anyway, he only ( Read more... )

Make him read Lovecraft's "The call of cthulhu"
That will twist his mind quite suitably :p

"Choose your own adventure" rocks! My munchkin has quite a sizeable collection. He's (translate: I'm) also a big fan of Paul Jennings and Roald Dahl. Ah, Roald Dahl. The first glimmers I ever got in school of reading for enjoyment. Certainly beats those damn binky the fucking bear stories...

The problem I'm having with "problem child" however is that he loses interest very quickly, and the absence of pictures would speed up the process. Now, if you happen to come across a twisted tale that is written largely in single syllables with lots of gory/destructive pics, please let me know :) I'm sure "problem child" would love me forever.

Never heard of Lovecraft. What's he/she like?

May a small child clown eat your brain for your ignorance! :p
H.P. Lovecraft is perhaps one of history's creepiest yet most brilliant writers.
I suggest you have a browse here: http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/index.html

And of course, read "The call of Cthulhu" here: http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/thecallofcthulhu.htm

I promise, it will twist the munchkin's mind :D
