Lessons Learned
“If you want to draw a line for someone, Pete, you have to make sure you hold them to it as well. Otherwise it’s just words, and no one will ever take your demands seriously.”
Nathan’s words rang true, there was no denying it.
A lesson learned too late, for sure, but eventually Peter got the message. Eventually he stood his ground.
Unfortunately it was when he had to choose to go against Nathan, and his brother was less than pleased about it. Not that it stopped him from capturing Peter alongside the other specials, chaining him up and drugging him.
Peter never knew what his next move would have been had they reached the plane’s original destination. When he was free, however, running back to Nathan wasn’t an option. He had said he wanted no part in Nathan’s plans - other than opposing him - and he would stand by those words.
He had drawn a line, and he wasn’t about to cross it.
Nathan would learn it the hard way if he had to, foolishly thinking Peter would just surrender when he was asked to.
When he flew out to Danko’s apartment, the person in charge of the manhunt, Peter knew it was a move his brother would not expect. He didn’t think Peter had it in him. To actually shoot a person… Peter hadn’t been able to shoot their father, or Nathan. He was still just a nurse in Nathan’s eyes; his little brother with innocent dreams.
Well, Nathan had been smashing plenty of dreams lately, Peter’s among them.
Danko, unlike Nathan, believed that he was a monster. To make sure he showed his true colors, he told Peter to shoot him.
At that point Peter faced the difficulty of keeping one’s word. To draw the line and not cross it.
He knew he should do it, and part of him wanted to, but in the end… It wasn’t because of Nathan’s sudden appearance that when he fired the gun, he shot Danko in the shoulder instead of the head, or the heart. It wasn’t because he was cautious of Nathan’s warnings that things would get exceedingly worse if he killed the man. He didn’t do it to escape the situation, either, although getting back to Matt and Mohinder was becoming more and more important as he heard they were in the danger of being captured.
Peter couldn’t shoot Danko because it was who he was. Line or no line, promise of vengeance or not, it didn’t feel right.
It wouldn’t end their struggle, and killing Danko wasn’t the solution.
More than that, it wasn’t who Peter was.
He simply had to learn to draw the line somewhere else, where he could keep from stepping on it.
