Cognitive Dissonance

I am seeing this a lot recently and it strikes me as odd and, hypocritical isn't the right word for it, maybe just stupid is the right description. This concerns the election, but isn't directed against one candidate or the other. Some people know who I'm supporting, but it really isn't important to this discussion, what I have is a question. How ( Read more... )

The connection - with which I do not expect you to agree :) - is that we should encourage everyone to participate in their government, that it is the diversity of opinion which makes for a strong society, and that includes things that we disagree over. I can concede that some (positions in opposition to my positions...oh, I'll just say it: conservatives) may have ideas that deserve to be heard, examined for usefulness and reason, and implemented, dismissed or debated.

On a more street-level, day-to-day and even petty feeling, yeah, I agree with you. I hope they don't vote.
That's my contradiction. But I contain multitudes ;)

I guess it is the conflict between the philosophy of the open society and the opinion that I'm right and people who are wrong shouldn't screw it up.

Maybe it just comes down to inherent arrogance and narcissism.

So it is a cynical thing for you, you don't actually want them to vote if they are going to vote against you, but you are playing the odds that they will probably vote with you?

It's simple. I want this country to be FAIRLY run. I want EVERYONE to have a voice, to make their opinion heard. I don't want aristocratic rich white men to run things just because they have the money and power. This country is a democracy and everyone should have the chance to have their say.

Also, it is my firm belief that most people in this country share my beliefs and share my support for the Presidential candidate I espouse. But even if that weren't the case, if the election were run FAIRLY, and everyone voted, and every vote counted, and the candidate who got the most votes won....then I could be content, knowing that the people had decided.

cheers,
Phil

Were you content when Hamas won a free and fair election?

.....I'm sorry, I was talking about the presidential election here in the United States. I fail to see how a terrorist organization or the way it is run has anything to do with said election.

cheers,
Phil
