Dawn goes down to day.
Natalie leaned against the cool glass, watching as the sun rose slowly over the horizon. Her hand rested lovingly on her growing stomach. She was learning to love this time of day, though she’d always rather been a night person. It was so quiet and calm, having the potential to be whatever one chose to make of it. Whatever might have happened the day before, this moment, just as the sun was rising, was a blank slate.
Things were still strained between her, Brian, and Kay, but they were all making an effort to find a way to make this difficult situation work. It made these quiet, calm moments all the more precious.
She turned as she heard someone coming down the hall, smiling at Brian. “What are you doing up so early?” she asked, her voice quiet in the early morning stillness.
“I could ask the same of you,” he replied pointedly.
Her smile turned a bit bashful. “I couldn’t sleep, morning sickness,” she explained, shrugging slightly.
His hand reached out hesitantly to press against their growing child, and she smiled encouragingly at him. “Natalie,” he whispered, his eyes staring deeply into hers. “I have loved you for a long time, you know that, and there is no one else in this world who I would want to have a son with.”
“I know,” she whispered, pain and pleasure a confusing mix in her voice.
“I’m sorry, so very sorry that I took advantage of you that night.” She began to protest, but he stopped her. “No, let me finish, please. I’m sorry for that, but I refuse to be sorry that we’re having a son, that this situation gave you your freedom. I’m not sorry that even if it’s only in name and only temporary that I have had the pleasure of calling you my wife.”
He leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “I’ll always love you, Natalie, but I think that with a little more time, I can accept that we’re not to be. Kay is stubborn, aggressive, and incredibly proud, but she’s also passionate and loves you to the deepest part of her. I was too stubborn to see that before. She’s good for you, and I want you to know that I’m happy that she’s a part of your life, our life.”
A tear spilled out of the corner of her eye, and she smiled widely as she hugged him tightly. “You have no idea how much that means to me, Brian. Thank you.”
