ack. so, I just got into an argument with my brother over a silly little spider in the house. My stance? it's harmless, there's no reason to kill it, take it outside if you can. His? Girlfriend's freaked out, gotta be swatted. I'm so taoist, I guess ( Read more... )

I gotta say from a silly girl's point of view- them Spiders is asking for it! ha ha! Sorry but they creep me out!

I like spiders.

Though if I see a wolf spider, it's dead.

Then again I've been bitten by one - my leg almost fell off for a couple months... so I'm biased.

The rest of them are fine.

Dear Switzerland,
I agree the spider should be spared, maybe. What if it is a female and is about to lay eggs? Then you'll have spider infestation and that's never good. On the other hand, how do you know it's not poisonous? If you can make sure the spider is male and not poisonous, I'd say keep it. If not, get rid of it.. but how can you tell? It may be better to err on the side of caution.

There are about 200,000 species of spiders, 30 are harmful to humans. That's .015%, I'll take my chances. :) Anyway, it's not to say that I *want* spiders in the house, just that I try to get em out the most humane way possible and spare them the swat...

30 are deadly, others can still screw ya up, but it's still a major minority. just wanted to clarify...

Yeah, I agree. I like spiders, too, so I generally leave them alone. Maybe blow at them so they get pushed away from me.

Since spiders help keep other pests under control (e.g. ants) I'm sure it's handy to have them around, you know? Which would you rather? a couple of spiders, or a hoard of ants?

Although I had a girlfriend not too long ago who was TOTALLY freaked out by arachnids, and I have to say when it comes to women vs. spiders... women always win.
