Things I Learned In K-12 School Lit

I never liked my literature classes in high school. This is funny, because I've always loved reading. But I think I've pieced together why I never liked those classes. At first I was sure it was the "classic literature" angle that did it, because I can't stand contemporary or classic stuff; call me a philistine, but my tastes are 90% fantasy. I ( Read more... )

Dude, I wish that this was a public post, because I want to link my flist to this. I have always hated capital-L Literature, but I didn't even know that the main reason was probably its unrelenting dystopia and despair until you outlined it for me.

The only "classic" author I have loved is Charles Dickens -- master of the happy ending.

I'll unlock it for you if you like; I'd say that you could post it verbatim, but most of the meat of it is in the responses. I've gone friends-only because of family putting their noses where they don't belong, but I think I can let this one go by.

You think English Lit is depressing, try Spanish literature.

Still, I'm inclined to disagree with your conclusions. I'll have to think up some counter-examples.
