It is not about squashing religious freedom. They should just not build that mosque next to Ground Zero. That would be like allowing the Japanese to build a Shinto temple next to the U. S. S. Arizona because not all Japanese were responsible. The truth of the matter is that muslims WERE responsible for the 9-11 attacks. To allow them to put a ( Read more... )

Yeah because Jews and Christians haven't and don't still commit atrocious acts "in the name of their religion".

Well people tend to over look the things that People in the Christian faith's do in the name of God. sure they attacked the USA, but no one here looks at the fact of how many times The USA has gone into their lands and kicked them around and fucked with their nations. As he said not all Japanese were not responsible, do you ever stop to think not all Muslims were responsible, since a good bit of them dont give two shits about the USA enough to bother attacking it since they are trying to make a living and surive in their own countries just like we are?

Indeed.

I don't like Islam personally. But consider how many muslims live in western nations, how easy it is to make a bomb and kill people, then look at how many attacks take place every day. The danger of that religion to public safety is greatly exaggerated.

Actually, this is about squashing religious freedom. It's been 9 god damn years since that attack in which many muslims died also, get over it. NY city has a ton of muslims, you are marginalizing them by singling them out over this.

That muslim -community center- is -moving in- to a building TWO blocks away from the site. Its been nine years, its not -that- close to ground zero, its not going to be an obnoxious mosque with the towers.

The united states is about freedom and liberty right? Have the spine to allow people to exercise their right to buy property and establish religiously inspired institutions even if you do not approve of the religion

I agree it has been nine years and nothing has been built there. And we used to be about freedom but how many liberties have been taken away, but I am drifting off topic. I was under the impression it was to be built directly adjacent to the site. I have to agree with Ael on this one, instead of focusing on one religion, why not make it a center for everyone to come and practice their own religion. My argument is that they should respect the sacred nature of the site. Many people died there from all nations.

IIRC, many in the muslim community were appalled by the attacks of that day, but I think it was that the Palestinians were celebrating in the streets that still makes it a sore point for most Americans. However, the muslim community tends to be overshadowed by a very vocal and very violent minority and for most of us Americans, that is what we see as the face of Islam.

Also, mosques are not obnoxious. They are works of art harkening back to a more peaceful and advnaced culture.

It's like allowing a church to be built on the site of a bombed-out abortion clinic. It's not about rights, it's about being tasteless.

And even if this thing does get built, it's just going to have problems at the wazoo with people who didn't want it there vandalizing it.

They wouldn't have to build one since towns there (as they are here) are infested with churches. Better break them down not to offend or hurt the feelings of clinic bombing victims shall we?

You missed my second point. It may be better to refuse permission to build this because of the inevitable vandalism.
