Screw watching the news, sports are on. Shit, we need to get back to being a society where the scientists that make football POSSIBLE are the heroes and not the drug/power addicted athletes. No quarterback EVER put a man on the moon. No coach ever sent a probe to the far reaches of the solar system or discovered something that improved the lives of ( Read more... )

We are on the verge of war with North Korea and all the main networks here are showing is stupid American football. There are bigger things going on in the world than sports.

You say "scientists" but I'd hope you also include the great engineers in that statement. Don't forget those such as Farnsworth and Tesla. Without them, modern life simply would not be.

I think it would be hilarious if we finally dropped the pretense of all actual sport from sports and just allowed the athletes to drug it up as much as they want. Finally let it degenerate into a proper testosterone-fueled IQ-numbfest that it's been trying to be so desperately to be for the last 30 years or so.

Of course I include engineers. They do science as well, but they're on the applied side of it. Tesla was ahead of his time.

I'm glad you acknowlege them. Some people don't, since they argue that engineering is a "lesser" science because it's practical work.

Tesla was one of the top ten minds of the 19th and 20th centuries. And by far, the most under-appreciated. He's one of my heroes and idols.

Tesla was labelled as being a crank, but I wonder how much of that was Edison's doing. Edison wasn't actually the genius people think he was. He was actually a thief. He was the Microsoft of the time. If he could steal your ideas, he would do it in a heartbeat. Tesla is seen as being the father of the superweapon when that was never true. I believe, as is shown in The Prestige, that Tesla was already thinking of not just alternative energy sources, but more efficient extraction and use of that energy. I do know that he considered and, some say designed, ways to use electric currents for propulsion (in aircraft, not that modified Soviet boomer Tom Clancy thought up). I should also add that Leonardo da Vinci was an engineer and so was Galileo Galilei to a point but that is what was expected of Renaissance era scientists. They didn't just draw fancy artwork and stare at the stars. Galileo modified the telescope to study the stars and Leonardo beat the Wright Brothers by, what, 3 centuries?
