It occurred to me that I should actually say what Baby is, for the folks that don't want to go searching for the info.
Baby is an ASUS eee pc 701 4G, black.
The ASUS product page is here:
http://eeepc.asus.com/global/product.htm I bought from Costco.com because they've got a 90 return policy. I can return it for any reason, even I decide I don't like the color for a complete refund, price + tax and S&H. So totally no risk. Online only, they don't have them in the store. I think they'd sell a ton of them if they just had a display model for ppl to play with.
Costco.com had the white ones up, then sold out of them. Reports were that they had over 900 orders backordered, and it was still up on the site for another couple of weeks before it got pulled. Wednesday the black one showed up. I caved and ordered that night. It shipped on Thursday and arrived in Vegas Friday evening. Delivered yesterday afternoon. Both black and white are up on Costco.com now with black shipping in 5-7 days and white shipping in 15-20 days 'due to overwhelming demand.' In Nevada, from Costco, and yes you have to have a Costco membership, it's $441 including shipping and tax. They can be had from many online sellers, so you can avoid tax and get it a little cheaper if you want, but the 4G unit is the same $400 everywhere. It's just a matter of tax/no tax and shipping.
costco.com White: Item # 251329, Black: Item # 258093
The most OMG! useful place for info is here:
http://www.eeeuser.com/The wiki has step by step, 'type this, hit enter,' instructions for all kinds of things. Most of this stuff is being worked out in the forums, so if you browse there you can see what kinds of things will eventually show up. There's chatter about the default OS, installing other versions of Linux, XP, Hacks and Mods you can do. Very cool, very useful.
Note to self, go back this afternoon and crosspost to LJ and JF.
And to anyone keeping track, yeah, this makes 1 person, 1 cat and three computers in my house.
