Ohno's return from the party had been soon after Nino's sudden disappearance. Venice just wasn't as fun by yourself, especially not after someone you'd just realized you had a crush on ran off.
Ohno had spent most of the morning trying to figure out just what he'd done to cause Nino's flight and had managed to burn himself on the oven this morning whilst zoning out.
Now banished to run the front counter, a bandage on his arm to cover the slight burn, Ohno sat with his sketch book. A picture of the Sun and Moon dancing happily among the Venetian streets graced several pages now - their faces happy.
The bakery would be closing in about an hour, but Ohno was certain he didn't have the will to make it to the park today. He'd gone with the hopes Nino would join him there again, but now he was certain he'd probably not see the spunky magician again.
Sighing, Ohno held his cheek in one hand while his other shaded the sketch, not even looking up as the door to the bakery chimed a visitor.
A wave of relief washed over Nino as he noticed Ohno's presence at the counter. At least, at the very least, the man had been able to get home somehow. Maybe through another mirror, just as he and Sho had done. But as happy as he felt to know that Ohno was alive and well and here, not trapped somewhere or left for dead, it didn't stop the guilt from bubbling up in his stomach. He had to apologize. Buy all of the melon pan in the shop if he had to, just because he knew Ohno would share it with him.
The fact that the bakery was empty, save one customer with a newspaper and a coffee, made the tension feel thicker somehow. It had to be this way, really. He'd never get a chance to say he was sorry otherwise. Ohno would be too busy, too distracted to worry about the guy who'd run off on him in Venice. Venice. His mind was still reeling over that one

Ohno's expectations as to the identity of the customer didn't prepare him for Nino's squawk and the feel of the younger man's hand on his own.
Blinking owlishly, Ohno chewed his lip, chancing a glance up at Nino and seeing just how haggard the young magician looked under his ball cap.
"I burned myself on the oven this morning, it's nothing," Ohno explained, voice soft and a little apprehensive.
Was Nino going to run away again? Ohno didn't think his already weak self-confidence would fair well if the recently-discovered object of his affection couldn't stand to be in the same room (or country, for that matter) with him for more than a few minutes.
"I'm glad you got back safe," Ohno said softly, his lower lip caught between his teeth.
He'd walked right into the bakery and invaded Ohno's personal space. Brilliant. No, really, best way to apologize to someone you'd wronged, creep them out the minute you step inside the door.
He dropped Ohno's hand sheepishly and mumbled a soft 'oh' before scanning through the options beneath the counter. He couldn't make eye contact right now, he just couldn't. His heart was doing this annoying thud thud thing and wasn't sure where to even begin with making things right again.
He couldn't focus on the pastries, he only saw a moonlit mask and the blurs of a crowd spinning around him. No, he was spinning. The room had stood still.
"I don't know what I was thinking," he finally started, clearing his throat and straightening up to risk a glance at Ohno once more, "I should have asked if you wanted to come with me and find a way out together. I was... overwhelmed, thought maybe it wasn't real. I wouldn't have treated you that way if... what I'm saying is - "
He took off his cap and bowed his head slightly, "I'm really sorry."
So Ohno did have a chance. Well, maybe. It was still possible that Nino had a huge unrequited crush on Sho and therefore Ohno didn't have a chance in hell. Maybe he wasn't even Nino's type
( ... )
Nino didn't have a type. Nino liked who he liked, there didn't seem to be a common trait amongst those he'd dated. Maybe at first, a bad habit of dating women he knew would leave him in the end. But once he'd grown out of that, and realized he was also attracted to men, it hadn't seemed as if there was a pattern. One was sweet, but too innocent. After a few months of trying to tone down his personality he'd eventually gotten fed up and was able to actually be the one to end his relationship for once. A few dates and flirting sessions here and there, nothing serious. After that it was the ego-maniac. Since then... no one

Ohno simply shook his head, chewing his lip a little to try and hide the way his face fell at the mention of Machida.
"I nearly left the country for him, but he left me behind," Ohno replied simply, not quite ready to open wounds he'd just finished licking.
Shaking his head to clear the thoughts, Ohno offered Nino a bright smile to make up for his bout of angst, nodding. "Sure! I want to see that Dragon Quest poster!"
Nino frowned, scratching the back of his neck. It felt like a little hope had just been lost. How long had they dated? If Ohno was willing to leave the country for him, they must have been as serious as it gets. And how could Nino possibly compare to someone like that?
A childish, penny-pinching, magician as an actual profession, dog-faced... him. No one had tolerated him for long, even those he'd managed to dump first. His confidence was already shaken. Competing against someone's true love? He couldn't possibly expect to win, could he

"Irasshaimase..." he drawled.
