This is indeed correct. It was also one of the leading exporters of the superior criollo cacao. Generally, in the world of chocolate you'll find three type of beans that are used: criollo, forastero, and trinitario. Most chocolate consumed in the world comes from the inferior (but sweeter) forastero bean. Criollo tends to be be very difficult to grow due to its sensitivity to "terroir" as it were and can only be found growing in a few places - like Venezuela or Madagascar. Trinitario is a hybrid breed of criollo and forstero and has a deeper flavor and richness that forestero but is considerably hardier and less prone to disease than criollo.
Currently in Venezuela all three can be found, which leads back to the original question ... what type of beans, man?

From what I remember Venezuela used to be the number one country for cacao exports, hell back in the proverbial day top chocolate came from it.
