Patents are around 1000$, unfortunately. At least they were when Chris Crawford (an individual game designer) patented his storytelling engine.

Holy crap; does the government at least have grants and loans and the like to help the small-time inventor afford such exorbitant fees?

There are systems to support inventors, but really, if a person worked a long time to invent something, 1000$ is a small fee considering how much work has to go into it (it's a really long process, you have to have a patent expert compare your work to every other patent in existence, and there are hundreds of thousands of patents). Most people make around 35,000$ a year in America, and even the poorer families like mine which make less than 15,000 a year, that's still only 1/15th of one's yearly salary, something which wouldn't take *that long* to save up for, if it's important and a priority. If it were any less than 1000$, people (and especially businesses) would be patenting everything without thought, and it would put the government out of business to pay all the patent lawyers and clerks to do all that work.

Well, I only intended to submit a design patent for what really amounts only to a novelty item. It's not worth it to me to pay $1000 or so for it.
