So! About those of us considering apping a .hack// character... how would their levels and whatnot be handled? Would they get leveled down too?

Yep, they're down to level 1.

Not the same person, but I wanted some more clarification on the same basic question:

Does this mean that we have to make it seem as if the characters have first entered the game, or have all .hack// characters were leveled down for some unknown system error? And if they were leveled down due to game error, would characters still be in the same guilds and such? Without a Guildmaster, would there still be a guild? If applied at endgame (let's say the last .hack//GU game), would Haseo still be the Guildmaster of Canard and Raven?

It'd be the latter! They may view it as an unknown system error at first, but it'd probably become evident that The World now isn't The World that they were playing in, despite being stuck in it like what happened in the games. As for guilds, they no longer exist, but characters are free to recreate them! There's a Silabus reserve, for example, and if he got in before Haseo, he'd be likely to re-create Canard. But if Haseo came along, Silabus would probably give it to him. Although guild creation is limited, if there's a good reason for it to exist like Canard, it'd be allowed.

If Haseo wanted to recreate Raven, he'd be welcome to, but I don't really see why without a system to use with it. But no, guilds don't carry over from canon, and the characters don't have to be forced from the beginning of the game-- they can come in level 156 and all and be incredibly pissed to find they're level 1-- AGAIN poor Haseo-- and that all of their items are gone except for what was physically on them, locked in their inventory ( ... )

Can characters swim in Mac Anu Harbor/any of the fields with water in them/some sort of yet to be unveiled ~water field~? I'm thinking of apping someone who would go crazy if he had nowhere to swim.

In the harbor and streams through town, yes! That'd be just fine. There's an island barely visible from the harbor that's only accessible due to an annual event later on, but it's waaaay too far to swim to. There's nowhere else to go, but it's completely free.

In fields, however, it gets a bit tricky. Most of the field areas are like tiny islands connected by bridges, and surrounded on all sides by water with small beaches all around. You're perfectly welcome to swim in these! But if you swim out too far, before you know it, you're swimming back towards land on the opposite side of the island that you left from.

I hope that makes sense!

It does, thanks! I was just worried he'd try to dive into the harbor and hit an invisible wall and have his soul crushed. 8(

I just noticed something that could be problematic in the future. The Macabre Dancer class has most skills listed at unknown levels, and fan levels start at 51. (I think this is because Yata joins the party at a high level?)

Weapons can be easy enough to ignore, but what should I do about skills for the RP? If Spin gets into a fight, I'm not sure what he can do besides whacking it with a fan or using his own abilities. =D;

HAHA oh that's true! Sorry about that; let's just play pretend and say they start from level 1. Because they have so many skills, they'll gain a new skill with every level earned instead of every couple levels.

Thinking that I'd like to RP a favorite character of mine somewhere and being the enormous sucker for .hack//GU that I am, I'm seriously considering this game. Unfortunately, I was still confused about a few things even after going over all the information multiple times, so I decided to post to the FAQ page and hope my questions aren't too idiotic ( ... )

Hey anon! It's actually pretty simple-- holy relic is a laid-back setting and most of it's pretty much handwaved in the name of magic. Yes, it's a physical world just modeled on The World. Things can still be "coded" but the way they work is like, GMs code them and design them in computer programs, then they get magicked into real life. They can do this with buildings, food, items, people, you name it. If they feel like doing it, they can make whatever they want come into existence. There's an overarching background to it that I won't get into too much for plot purposes, but the GMs are real people as well, hired to run The World as a sort of testing grounds. This version of The World is pretty much a controlled alternate universe.

The NPCs are indeed AIs, created for the game. They aren't real people or anything. There's no actual connection to the .Hack universe-- it's just that holyrelic is based on it for setting images and mechanics purposes. .Hack characters recognize everything and things work the same, but it isn't actually a .Hack ( ... )

Yes, I think that covers everything, thank you! The type of worldset was what most confused me; I thought another response to a question said it was set in the original .hack//GU universe, but maybe I misunderstood.

And no worries about worldbuilding; .hack/The World is awesome enough to have an experimental alternate universe based on it. ♥ This actually makes it sound even more interesting, now!

Nyahaha, cool, he can freak out over being human~ Although what about a robot pet? Would that become organic too? Could I perhaps have it look like one of the monsters? 8D (Whoops I think I lied about that being everything; just remembered his dog. Ahaha.)

I figured Rogues might be set up that way; that's cool! I'll just design him a general new look; maybe only subtle changes depending on weapon type. Probably works better that way for him anyway.

Kwee, I'm excited now. Thanks again!

The setting itself is .Hack//G.U. because it was easiest to find a wide array of high-quality images from it, but the universe isn't the same, no. People were having too many problems thinking it was a .Hack-verse game when it really just snags the setting/mechanics for lazymods. :c

HM HMMMM well there's two ways you could go with that! It's, of course, a steampunk setting so you can either just ask the mods for the animal at level 20, or you can like... build one yourself!? I don't know if it's terribly sentient or just a robodog toy-like pet, but it's up to you!

Not a problem! Glad to be of service.

Does equipment from home (the locked level 20 stuff) take up equipment slots? ie. Can Spin wear his headphones and an accessory from the World, or do his headphones fill up the accessory slot?

Even if he has to take a hit in the stats, you know he's never removing his headphones ever again now that he has them back.

/realizes this has little to no mention in the actual RPing at all but still wants to know |D;;

skycatcher September 1 2010, 03:42:34 UTC
Nope! It doesn't fill up any slots, they're treated as outside objects. \o/

You bet! ♥ Because you can use either your own weapon or the game's weapon, it pretty much works the same with everything else.
