Link in The Wind Waker

Personality:
Link is a quiet but animated young boy who, until coming of age, had lived a peaceful life with his grandmother and sister on a tiny island in The Great Sea. Circumstances thrust him into a wild adventure and turned an unsuspecting, but not unwilling, kid into a hero, which may have intensified the traits Link exhibits far more than a quiet life on Outset Island could have ever done.

Though he is quiet and humble and very rarely outwardly shows smugness or cockiness other boys his age may display, Link is still intensely expressive. It is never difficult to guess what he's thinking, judging by the look on his face alone. Though he can be easily readable, he is not expressive in the overly flaily sort, and is quite capable of fading into the background if need be, and of sneaking about fortresses undetected. He can adapt fairly well to the situation at hand, so to speak.

Link is loyal to those important to him, and protective and willing to help even those he doesn't know that well. If they are a good person outwardly, and if they are in need, then Link has been known to traverse the entire ocean to help them in some way. He is fiercely courageous, and some may consider him stupidly so: note Tetra's skepticism in allowing Link to sail with her crew so he could save his sister after she was kidnapped, and Link stubbornly choosing to come along anyway despite when Tetra clearly laid out the odds against him.

Despite his generally positive demeanor, Link does have a very slight sarcastic streak, though he tends to be quietly accepting of inconvenient situations. For example, though he very clearly disliked the Hero of Time outfit he had to wear on his birthday, he wore it with very little complaint, and throughout the course of his adventure after. On a more severe level, Link quietly-- and hilariously-- accepted being literally shot out of a cannon from Tetra's ship, despite his own convictions and the obvious danger to himself. This also plays into his sometimes stupidly courageous trait.

Additionally, Link is fairly clever, and able to sort out a wide variety of problems with a vast array of tools. He works best when left to his own devices, and is fairly handy and capable of thinking outside the box. That is to say, instead of the boisterous and outspoken heroes of other legends, Link is the type of hero to silently chip away at the strength of his enemies directly under their noses.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
As noted earlier, Link is clever, and will solve his way out of some fairly complicated predicaments by using whatever resources he has available. This problem-solving ability will be extended to anyone Link befriends, or anybody Link happens to pass by who needs help. He is extremely handy with tools and is able to learn how to use new ones at an impressively rapid pace. He also has notable aim.

Being a generally affable person, if not immediately extroverted, it's not difficult to befriend Link. He is capable of gathering a network of friends who will support him throughout whatever region he happens to be in, whether it's simply through friendship or because he helped a wide variety of people with something. He is additionally generally a good judge of character.

Link is also good at sneaking around, and particularly pilfering treasure from pirates.

Weaknesses
Because it is so easy to read Link's expressions and what he's thinking, it wouldn't be difficult to use his own reactions against him. Couple that with the fact that he's likely to help anybody who asks him for help, and Link could find himself unwittingly helping someone evil, solely in the name of good.

Additionally, his courageous nature has the potential to get him into trouble, particularly because he has been known to knowingly plant himself into situations with a reckless disregard for his own personal safety. On the other hand, this courage is also what ultimately saves everybody he'd befriended thus far in his story, so his courage is something of a double-edged sword.

Perhaps Link's biggest fear is harm coming to those he cares the most about. He was visibly worried about his sister after she was kidnapped, even as he traveled to save her. This fear may also likely drive his reckless courage.

Samples
First Person Sample:
[the tree-- or... creature of some sort, Link can't really quite discern what it is, though it certainly isn't unfamiliar-- sits rigid as stone at the direct center of the entrance to Route 29. his perplexed Trainer is clutching the 'gear some several feet behind as he's recording him, scooting along on his stomach, as if he's silently trying to sneak up on him.]

Monster, right? [hissed quietly, but it's still hard to tell whether he's talking to the Bonsly or the 'gear. Link, at least, has half of the mystery figured out.]

[he scoots closer, silently. the Bonsly remains standing, seemingly completely unaware of his impending doom. inch, inch, inch...]

[Link suddenly stops. his hand lifts into the 'gears view, and he waves it frantically at the Bonsly, as if trying to capture his attention. nothing. Link makes a noise that's a cross between a light sigh and a confused murmur. should he feel threatened? all signs so far are pointing to no.]

[the feed suddenly sways wildly, as Link lifts the 'gear to tap the Bonsly experimentally with it. thunk. thunk.]

[and then Link's track record of better judgment comes to a crumbling down spectacularly when the Bonsly suddenly turns, eyes red and wild, and leaps at the gear, and the unfortunate bearer of the 'gear, who yelps out one long, terrified, "waaaaaaaahhhhhhh--!" right as the feed fizzles and cuts to black.]

Third Person Sample:
The Wind Waker was by all means useless in regards to its original intent in Johto, but that certainly didn't mean that it was nothing more than a noneffective silver stick for conductors.

He still was a conductor of sorts, after all. When he held the Wind Waker in his hand, lifted to his eye level, Makar stood rigid, expectant. Even the three tufts of green that sprouted from the Bonsly's head like foliage stood completely still.

Link slowly moved the Wind Waker to the left. To the right. Makar swayed along with his movements, eyes still locked on his conductor. Up. Down. Right. Makar suddenly leapt into action, swaying every which limb he had. Flail. Down, hold it down for a moment. Right. Makar delivered a low kick to the nearest tree he had grown in likeness of. Up, hold it for three seconds, then suddenly down, as if slamming it into the ground. Makar threw the biggest rocks he could carry down the path of Route 29.

It was by no means a perfect method of battling, but as far as Link was concerned, it needed just a little more practice. The things he could do! The places he and Makar could go! If he was going to be taking on these "gym leaders," having Makar be able to obey his commands with a wave of the Wind Waker could give him a solid advantage. Imagine, an opponent not being able to guess their next move because he wouldn't need to call it out!

The first few battles they attempted with this method, however, brought to Link's attention a fairly obvious predicament, now that he thought about it. Immediately at the start of every fight, Makar immediately turned to face Link for instruction, showing his opponent his back and, well... setting himself up to lose spectacularly. During the third battle and after the third potion, Link, always quick to think on his feet, took off running, circling around the two Pokémon and waving the Wind Waker almost frantically. Makar... looked mildly confused for a moment, waddling and turning to face Link as he circled round, before it hit him.

Up, hold it for three seconds, down. Rock Throw.

And hence, Link captured his second Pokémon, a Pidgey.
