X-Men as Metaphor

I should start by saying that I haven't actually seen First Class yet. I intend to, probably next week on one of my Dad's days off work. A fun summer movie is my traditional Father's Day present to him, and this summer that means superhero movie. My only interest in Thor is to see the movie background which will, as I understand it, carry over to ( Read more... )

I saw that secret, and I'm still trying to understand it. I mean, I recognize all the words and what they mean i that order, but I fail to see how they relate to actual movie. It's like OP and I were watching two different things entirely.

But I loved it, despite knowing about the ways it screws with comics canon and being initially annoyed at the way it tremendously screws with the movie-verse timeline. Then I heard somebody say that they were pretty much only counting the first two movies when they made this one. I'm okay with that, even though I didn't hate Last Stand quite as much as everybody else. And though I haven't seen the first two in awhile, I think it's largely canon-compliant with them, save a small cameo by non-Beastly Hank McCoy.

Keeping in mind that I still haven't seen the movie, just from general knowledge of the x-men universe and spoilers I have for the film, I think there's probably a legitimate discussion to be had there. I'm just not terribly interested in it, not because of the subject matter, but because of the emotionalism that you don't seem to be able to escape when discussing issues like privilege (which I think is really poorly understood by most netizens in the first place) on livejournal.

Anyway, I am not averse to ignoring Last Stand, and honestly of all the ways that I've heard that First Class contradicts canon (and which canon would that be by the way, Marvel has made such a habit of rebooting the X-verse that it seems a little ridiculous to call foul on the reboot in the film), it's honestly the bestly Hank McCoy that bugs me the most, but I'll live with it.
