How to go from
to
.

This was made in Adobe Photoshop CS3 and uses selective color, so it is not translatable.

1. Open up the image you are going to icon in PS. Crop it to 100x100.

2. To add a bit of green to your icon, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color
Neutrals: +15 -11 +3 +11
Click OK.

3. To even out the green color, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color
Reds: 0 0 +10 -22
Yellows: +4 +6 -22 -33
Neutrals: -2 +7 0 +15
Click OK.

4. Add a bit more saturation by going to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation
Saturation: +12
Click OK.

5. It's looking kind of washed out and too-green now. To remedy this, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance
Shadows: +7 +4 +14
Midtones: 0 -17 -22
Highlights: -4 0 +25
Make sure "Preserve Luminosity" is checked. Click OK.

6. Add a bit more color to the skin by going to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color
Reds: -42 -3 +57 0
Yellows: -25 +3 -71 0
Neutrals: +7 -1 +4 +2
Click OK.

7. Duplicate the selective color layer you just made.

8. This icon could use a bit of lightening up; go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves
Input: 87
Output: 137
Click OK.

9. Duplicate the curves layer you just made.

10. Add some more contrast by going to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast
Contrast: +23
Click OK.

11. Add a bit more saturation to your icon by going to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation
Saturation: +16
Click OK.

And you're done!
