Promising. But I'm curious if the bill it's attached to is likely to be vetoed by W anyway. Or they could just pass it knowing the Roberts will declare it unconstitutional when he becomes Chief Justice, thereby setting back gay rights for at least a generation. Sorry to be so pessimistic. I just can't believe this will happen until the Dems control the House.

The bill it's attached to is INCREDIBLY passable, would be impossible for the White House to veto a bill that increases penalties for sex offenders and those who attack children. The House has always been the hard chamber to get this bill through, and the fact that it went through there first in this Congress is exceptionally hopeful sign. The lead sponsor in the Senate is Gordon Smith of OR (R). He carries huge clout in that body and last year we passed it on the merits by a veto-proof margin

Thanks for the info. I feel much better about it. Agree with the accountability issue. I like some Republicans (eg, Wm Weld) far better than some Democrats (Zell Miller).
I called my Representative's office this morning to voice my support and urge him to support the Conyers amendment. It's been a day of activism for me. LOL!
Now if only we can keep the Governator from vetoing AB 849!
