As the sun sets on this murky, dreary day, gentle music can be heard piping at the edge of your hearing. It’s a soft tune, lilting and playful. There are lyrics but sung too quietly for you to properly hear. You may think of the music as a simple annoyance - a buzzing in the ears, difficult to tune out but not impossible. However, as the evening progresses, the music grows louder and more enticing. It seems to be coming from one of the meadows to the north of the town.
Maybe you’ll stave it off. Maybe you’ll block up your ears. Or maybe you’ll give in to the overwhelming temptation to look, and travel up to the meadow.
The meadow has been ringed with carved turnips, forming a border that contains grass and trees and rocks. Some of the turnips are carved with evil, grinning faces, while others are silly, or artistic, or even carvings of your face, or the faces of friends. They are lit from the inside by a single flickering candle. Step between these turnips and into the meadow, and you’ll find yourselves wearing a costume of some kind - good, bad, tacky, lovely, it doesn’t matter. But you won’t be able to change it while you’re in the meadow.
As well as you, there are tents and awnings set up in the meadow. A few tents and poles are crowned with grinning, flickering pumpkins. One tent covers a large banquet table, lined with food of all sorts. Sweets, cakes, fish, meat, soups, breads, cheeses, fruits, and drinks both of Demeleier and recognisable from home are here, with plenty of gold and silver platters to array them out on. Feel free to take what you like - it’s all delicious.
Another tent covers a seated area with a brazier in it, as well as a pot of warm, spiced cider. Some hollowed-out apples are sitting on a counter here, filled up with the sweet drink. An open book is sitting on a plinth in the middle here, too, waiting to be read from. There is also a large tub filled with water and apples here, for those who want to try their luck.
Further away, a smaller tent is set up, swathed in dark reds and purples.
A large bonfire is set up in the centre of the meadow, crackling brightly and merrily. You won’t be able to discern the origin of the music, but maybe now that you’ve entered the meadow, you won’t really care to. You might even find yourself wanting to dance to the music around the bonfire.
It sounds like fun, and there are no fae in sight. Will you investigate?
