This post has been written oocly so that it's easier for players to find, as well as making it simpler to ask OOC questions/suggestions. However, there are IC copies of everything in here. One will be a handwritten copy, in the Town Hall, and the other is a digital copy archived on the communicators. Therefore, your character is free to link this to people, to read it, and know everything disclosed within. The only difference would be that it would be written in Souji's words - stuff in brackets is generally totally OOC info pertaining to handwaving and the like. On that note, you're also free to ask IC questions here. Just make a note in the comments that it's IC! Additionally, if your interested in having your character join the Watch but haven't found an opportunity to do so in game yet, feel free to let us know here!
WHAT THE WATCH ISThe Watch is an organization developed by residents of Demeleier, for protecting and aiding the community as a whole. This includes:
- dealing with threats from the dangerous fae, as well as threats from other residents
- searching for missing persons
- monitoring fae activity
These are the Watch's main objectives, but they will also assist newcomers, answers questions about Demeleier where possible, and gather general information about the place.
The Watch also holds a monthly meeting, to which all residents of Demeleier are welcome, to help coordinate and discuss things. (More on that below!)
WHAT THE WATCH DOES
The Watch is a busy organization and there is usually plenty for members to do. Duties include:
- Patrolling. This is NOT a requirement for membership.
- Weekly reports on notable occurences in Demeleier.
- Attendance of the monthly Watch meetings
- Misc. duties (all detailed below).
PATROLSWatch members follow a rota which is currently divided into 3 shifts of 8 hours per day. For each of those shifts, two patrols will be assigned, so that there are at least two patrols going around 24 hours a day.
During these patrols, Watch members are expected to take note of any fae activity they see. Anything of note is reported to the Watch's secretary/leader/second in command, allowing them to keep a record.
Patrollers can also expect to have to fight. They will be encountering hostile fae, probably on a daily basis, and they will have to fight to defend the village or themselves. (How many encounters patrollers face and how tough the fae are are also generally handwaved. If you want your character to get beat up on patrol? Go ahead!)
Patrols are always done in pairs. It doesn't matter what prowess or experience your character has, if they join the Watch, they will be assigned a partner. This is for safety reasons - many fae have glamour or similar powers that take more than brute force to overcome. In some cases, residents have even been replaced by fae for a period. By having a partner, this becomes a lot less likely. It also means that in the event that one of the members is hurt/taken/etc, it can be reported immediately.
Because of this, please note that your character will never go on patrol alone. If their partner is on hiatus or leaves Demeleier, or simply ill or in need of time off, they will be given a replacement partner. This means another member will be pulling extra shifts. (If you want to arrange this with another player, you are totally welcome to! Otherwise, assume that their partner is rotating. For example, Souji will probably come along on some shifts. Dante might be there for others. It all depends on who is available for each shift.)
The rota for patrols is usually done by the leader. If you have a preference for which time you work, you need to let them know. Shifts run from 6am - 2pm, 2pm - 10pm, or 10pm - 6am. You won't have time for long breaks because of the nature of the work. Patrolling can be tough, please bear this in mind. It's eight hours of physical work. There will be quiet periods, of course, but there are also likely to be periods where your character is having to deal with all kinds of nasties. Because of this, some characters may not be able to take, or may not want to take, as many patrols as others. Let the leader know and the rota will be adapted to suit their needs.
REPORTSMembers give reports about notable fae activity or other occurences to the secretary, second, or leader, at least once a week. Reports can be written, or you can just tell them about what happened and they'll note it down.(If you want to, you can let us know ICly or OOCly, though these reports are generally handwaved. There's always a chance to bring them up at meetings. Assume they happen every week.) These reports are documented by hand, in the Town Hall, for future reference.
ATTENDANCE OF WATCH MEETINGSAgain, more info about the meetings will be given below, but unless there are extenuating circumstances, attendance is considered mandatory. You do not necessarily need to participate a lot, but you will be expected to keep up to date on what's discussed. There will also be the opportunity to bring anything up you feel to be particularly of note.
MISC. DUTIESOn top of these things, Watch members have some general things that they should be aware of. If there are newcomers in need of help or explanation, Watch members should be willing to reach out to them and, if necessary, deliver iron to them. They might attempt to help when residents have questions or concerns about them place, or bring them to the attention of the Watch leader. They may also be drafted into helping with renovation/building work, or hunting and gathering. As the organization is voluntary, these things aren't mandatory, but it is helpful.
WATCH MEETINGSOnce a month, the Watch holds a meeting in the Town Hall. This is open to all residents of Demeleier, but attendance is only mandatory for Watch members. The meetings are usually held by the leader along with their second.
Topics discussed at the meetings will be watch recruitment and structure, watch reports, and also issues that are pertinent to all residents - for example, renovation and building, and supplies and stock. There is always an open floor for residents or members to bring up concerns, questions, or suggestions. Other important community-wide matters can also be discussed here (such as the recent concept of some sort of law system). (If you'd like a more detailed look at what goes on, just have a look at the ooc comm tag!) Meeting minutes are also taken for future reference.
Watch meetings are always held on the 27th of each month, at 1pm, in the Town Hall. The Watch may also call emergency meetings in light of big events, usually to discuss how best to deal with things. These will be announced on the network before they happen.
RECRUITMENT/NEW MEMBERSThe Watch is always recruiting new members. Joining is simple - you give your name to the leader or second. If you're interested in patrols, you'll also give a brief rundown of what abilities you have. In some cases, characters have had difficulty coming forth about these - either because of experiences or prejudice in their home world, or because the nature of their power is more personal. In these instances you are allowed a fair amount of privacy, but you are expected to give some kind of a heads up.
New members looking to take part in patrols are formally inducted as part of each meeting, though you are welcome to have your character join at any time. Until the meeting, however, they probably won't have a formal shift with a partner - they might work with another pair, for example, to get experience. Please note that unless your character explicitly states that they want to work with someone specific - such as a friend or colleague from home) - they will be paired with someone who has some experience working in the Watch.
Patrols are not mandatory and if your character would want to help with the administrative side of things, they're more than welcome to express interest and join. These members will not need to wait until a meeting to be inducted into the rota - they'll be shown how things are kept by the leader/second/leading secretary and will have a more flexible work schedule to suit them.
If your character feels they have something else to bring to the Watch, they are invited to come forward and discuss it. The Watch welcomes a wide variety of strengths. If they would like to join but have no combat experience, there is the chance to gain training and work with an established pair before coming a fully inducted member.
With limited stock in Demeleier, they can't afford to kit everyone out with iron-edged swords or similar - note that members of the Watch have priority when it comes to reinforcing or replacing weapons.
The most recent Watch Rota can be found on the
watch meeting tag in the OOC comm, or in watch meeting posts. ICly, characters can find a copy posted up in the Town Hall.
The current leader of the Watch is Valeria. Her acting second in command is Souji Seta, and the secretarial work is divided between him and Hermione Granger. Characters wanting more information can contact one of them seperately if they'd rather not leave a comment here.
