Ya, not surprised. Laptops can push an impressive amount of heat out of those tiny, little holes. Just don't get worried that it might be because your laptop's putting out too much heat; I'm fairly certain that most laptops would do the same.
Moreover, it's more likely the fact that the laptop is only sporadically on the tabletop. The heating, cooling, heating, cooling will likely warp most any material faster than just a constant heating.
