Poor Armand. I always suspected as much: Jeanne Lange is really an 'actress' in the archaic sense of the word! ;)

I read and was surprised by the fact that du Barry took the name Jeanne Lange. But the most surprise was when I found out that the Orzy's Jeanne Lange also existed, and she was a pretty famous actress

I've read about Mlle Lange before - but this connection is much juicier ;) (I think the Baroness may have based a composite of characters on Jeanne Lange - her career sounds a lot like Desiree Candeille in Elusive). And isn't Jeanne's duenna called Madame Belhomme?

I love the kernels of fact in the Baroness' stories, but she missed an opportunity with Jeanne (glossing over the 'clues') - she's obviously shrewd and had to claw her way to success, but I've never accepted that she could also be pure as the driven snow. I can imagine Marguerite knowing how to play the coquette, yet never giving away her heart or her dignity, but Jeanne comes across as a girl who can't - or won't - say 'no' ... Plus, adding a little 'experience' to her backstory would have been a novel way to tell her apart from Marguerite, so that Armand wouldn't in effect fall in love with a carbon copy of his sister ...
