Hello All! I rarely write on this community, but I thought I would share a brief story which concerns the Scarlet Pimpernel.  Recently, I took my first trip to London with my sister and had a wonderful time.  We bought a lot of DVDs, and as I was browsing through the sections, I came across the Richard E. 'Valentine Gautier' would suggest that he does.

What happens in that episode? That's the one with pseudo-Chauvelin's daughter, isn't it?

I don't think he does, either - he is definitely impressed by Gabrielle Damiens in Mam'zelle Guillotine, particularly when she beats seven bells out of him in the square (all part of his cunning plan!), but I don't think it went beyond a kiss or two. Why on earth would he? Plus, the Baroness was far too much of a romantic to suggest that her hero would be unfaithful, even for the good of the cause. Also, I think that the Baroness based the Blakeneys' marriage on her own, which is why their relationship is convincing. Sorry, I don't mean to sound so outraged!

an attempt at a Bond-esque PimpernelSadly, yes. I wonder if the series drew in more male viewers than female? I have mixed feelings about this adaptation - I think I would have liked it if I'd never read the book - I thought REG's take was interesting and would have been fun if it had been an original costume drama character, but it wasn't Percy. I also thought the actress playing Marguerite (name escapes me at the moment) was horrible and although I hate to say it, looked too old for the part.

I think I've my feelings about this series perfectly clear, but I agree that it would have been less painful if it was an original story and not an adaptation (or if I hadn't read the book or watched superior film versions beforehand). Grant wasn't Percy - too snide and cruel, not enough of a gentleman - or the Pimpernel - few disguises, little camaraderie with the League (Tony's death as the prime example) - but he was a dapper, enigmatic character, sort of a 'gentleman thief'-style hero, like Arsene Lupin ( ... )
